As a comedian
In 1998, Dave Rubin began his acting career in New York City, where he began performing stand-up and open mic performances. In 1999, he interned on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. In 2000, he worked at the Comedy Cellar, a comedy club located in Manhattan, New York City, and later that year, he created a television series with other Comedy Cellar comedians called The Anti-Show, a news show parody that was secretly filmed at the NBC studios at 30 Rockefeller Plaza. In 2002, he co-founded several comedy clubs in New York City, such as the Joe Franklin Comedy Club and Comedy Company in Times Square, where he continued to perform stand-up until 2007.
He also hosted the podcasts Hot Gay Comics and The Ben and Dave Show, which became television series on Here TV. In May 2009, Rubin co-created and hosted the podcast The Six Pack with New York City radio, television and podcast personality Ben Harvey. From October 2011 to December 2012, The Six Pack aired as a live talk show on Sirius XM Radio.
Rubin Report
In September 2012, while on The Six Pack, he created his own YouTube channel and named it The Rubin Report. In January 2013, Rubin joined The Young Turks, where he hosted The Rubin Report. He then moved from New York City to Los Angeles, California. On March 1, 2015, The Young Turks announced that Rubin would move to RYOT, an American immersive media company. Soon after, Larry King’s Ora TV picked up the show, which premiered on September 9, 2015.
He decided to run The Rubin Report independently and left Ora TV in 2016. As of May 2019, The Rubin Report has been viewed 200 million times. In 2019, The Rubin Report aired on BlazeTV.
The Rubin Report is associated with the Institute for Humane Studies (IHS), a libertarian nonprofit that engages with students and professors across the US and sponsors his show (one episode per month). Rubin decided to quit Patreon after Carl Benjamin (YouTuber) banned him from using Patreon, which he considered an infringement on free speech. Rubin continued to receive funds through his Patreon account until late 2018, and Rubin said he was receiving over $10,000 per month before deleting his account. Soon after, he decided to launch his own free speech-oriented crowdfunding site. In 2019, Rubin co-founded the creator crowdfunding site Locals with Scott Adams (comic creator) and Michael Malice (New York City writer, anarchist, columnist, and media personality).
dispute
In 2018, a report by Data & Society (a nonprofit research organization that studies the social impacts of data-centric technology and automation) stated that Rubin was part of a YouTube network that amplified far-right politics. The report cited his interview with Stefan Molyneux (Canadian far-right, white nationalist, white supremacist, former YouTuber and podcaster) as an example of his claim; in the interview, Dave had asked Stefan to elaborate on his views on the different average IQ test results of the races, and that these differences are genetic. The report argued that Dave did not challenge Molyneux in any substantive way and concluded that
By allowing him to speak without providing a reasonable and cogent rebuttal, Rubin provides a free platform for the white supremacist ideology on his channel.”
