In order to fight off Alastair Seeley’s (Powertoolmate Ducati) determined push on the final lap, the Milenco by Padgett’s Honda rider had to put all into it. Todd held on to win by 0.108s at the finish line.
Richard Cooper of Nottingham secured the last podium spot for Northern Ireland team BPE/Russell Racing on his Yamaha R6, with the top three riders separated by only slightly less than four tenths of a second.
On his MD Racing Yamaha, Ballymoney’s Michael Dunlop, 33, finished fourth despite being in contention for the win the whole six-lap race.
The top four battled it out throughout, and when Seeley, a 13-time Supersport race winner, passed for the lead on the Ducati on the penultimate lap, it appeared as though he had perfectly timed his plan.
At the start of the final lap, the 43-year-old passed Cooper at the Juniper chicane to take the lead, but Todd was in a resolute frame of mind.
With Cooper pushing Seeley back to third after a pass on the brakes into University, the 2022 National Superstock champion took the lead on the fast blast to Coleraine.
In Mather’s, Dunlop passed Seeley while Todd profited from the fighting behind him.
At Metropole in Portrush, Seeley launched a final assault and moved up to second, but Todd maintained the lead on the Coast Road stretch and brought the Honda home for his second victory in the competition.
In 2019, the 27-year-old took first place in a Supersport race at the North West in the rain, but this victory had greater significance.
After all the second-place finishes from the previous year, he added, “The team has worked so hard and it means so much.”
I didn’t want to let that opportunity pass me by. The final lap was quite difficult to evaluate, but I’m over the moon and that’s a dream.
“On the final lap, you can’t have a strategy because you don’t know what will happen from corner to corner. “This really means a lot, even though I already won the 600 in the rain.”
Runner-up “It wasn’t for lack of trying,” Seeley continued, “and it was a typical Supersport race with lots of bar-banging. “On the final lap, I was trying to make a break but there was no chance of succeeding,”
