David Allen Wright was born on December 20, 1982 in Norfolk, Virginia to parents Rhona and Elise Wright. Rhon, his father, was a police officer with the Norfolk Police Department. David spent his childhood in Virginia with his three brothers. While in elementary school, he studied and worked out with future Major Leaguer Michael Cuddyer, and in high school he played on teams with future stars such as Ryan Zimmerman, Mark Reynolds, BJ Upton and Justin Upton. Later, when he enrolled at Georgia Tech, he continued to pursue his passion by playing baseball for the varsity team. David had a .538 batting average in high school.

After the Mets lost Mike Hampton as a free agent to the Colorado Rockies in 2001, David Wright was selected in the extra round. On July 21, 2004, David made his major league debut at third base against the Montreal Expos. David finished his first season with a .293 batting average, 14 home runs and 40 RBI in 263 at-bats in 69 games. He was chosen as the rookie of the year.
On November 30, 2012, Ed Coleman and WFAN reported that David’s contract with the Mets had been extended. David agreed to a seven-year, $138 million contract extension with the Mets. After David completed his physical, the deal became official on December 4th. In April 2015, he took a break for 15 days due to a right hamstring strain. He was given a rehabilitation period of 60 days. Then he got back in shape and continued his career.
