Deacon Phillippe Talks Making His Debut Album in His College Dorm: ‘One of the Most Challenging Things’ (Exclusive)

When Deacon Phillippe was preparing his debut album earlier this year, he wasn’t working in a traditional recording studio. He was in his dorm room at New York University.

“It was one of the most challenging things I’ve ever done,” he told PEOPLE exclusively at the H&M x Rabanne launch party in New York on Nov. 8. “I recorded it all there with my friends, my roommates, while I was going to school.”

An album of 12 songs, New Earth, was released in April in the middle of Phillippe’s first year of music studies at NYU. The 20-year-old son of Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Phillippe admits that even though music is his greatest love, doing it while going to class is a lot harder than he expected.

“[Fitting everything in is] the hardest part, but I think if you’re doing what you love, it’s worth the sacrifice sometimes under stress,” he says. “I try to create routines. I have a daily schedule and try to relax at certain times and then work hard at others.”

Phillippe’s love of music dates back to his childhood, when he said he would drive around in the car with his dad listening to tunes. Drake put him on the path of producing.

“I heard this beat and I thought, ‘That’s what I’m really feeling — the production of that,'” he says. From there he started learning how to use various tools and programs to create music and started writing his own songs.

“That’s how I got here,” he shares, before his performance as a DJ at the launch party for H&M’s latest design collaboration. – I love it more than anything.

Phillippe had the support of his parents the whole way — one look at his Instagram and you’ll see plenty of comments from Witherspoon supporting her son. She even recorded a dance video to Phillippe’s first single of 2020 and posted it on social media.

“When your child has their first single… you have to dance! 🎶,” she wrote alongside the hilarious clip, and he replied, “Hahahaha I love you🤣.”

Now that Phillippe has finished his freshman year at NYU, he no longer lives in the dorms. Just this week, the sophomore showed off his New York apartment on TikTok, complete with a spiral staircase and vinyl wall.

Phillippe even shared his bedroom and his studio.

“I sing and play keyboards a bit, but mostly I make music on my computer,” Phillippe explained before playing a short sample for viewers.
