Deepak Baij became the Bastar District President of the National Students Organization of India in 2008. The following year, he was appointed general secretary of the Indian Youth Congress in Chhattisgarh.
From 2009 to 2011, Deepak Baij served as a party member of the Lohandiguda Block Congress Committee. Thereafter, he served as full-time Chairman of the Block Congress Committee from 2012 to 2014. In 2013, he was elected to the Chhattisgarh Legislative Assembly from Chitrakoot constituency. In 2018, Deepak Baij contested the Chhattisgarh Legislative Assembly elections representing Chitrakoot constituency. He won the Indian National Congress membership election by a margin of 17,000 votes.
On July 12, 2023, Deepak Baij took office as the President of the Indian National Congress in Chhattisgarh. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge appointed him to the post after taking over from Mohan Markam. Prior to this appointment, Deepak Baij served on various committees related to foreign affairs, chemicals and fertilizers. In 2023, he will join the Advisory Committee of the Union Ministry of Tribal Affairs.
Deepak contested the 2023 Chhattisgarh Legislative Assembly elections from Chitrakot constituency; however, he lost the seat to the BJP candidate Vinayak Goyal.

- In 2018, Deepak Baij made headlines for visiting a communal problem-solving camp in Chittapur village in Chhattisgarh. There he saw dirty water coming out of the well and was very angry. To express his frustration, he drank the water himself and then handed it to an officer to drink. Deepak received information that people in Chhindwara village had been forced to drink red water from wells for years. So he came to the village and collected some dirty water from the well in bottles.
