Deion Sanders Says 'Being a First-Time Grandfather Is Wonderful' After His Daughter Gives Birth to Baby Que (Exclusive)

While Deion, 57, spent most of the offseason preparing his players, staff and other members of the Colorado Buffaloes for the upcoming college football season, he is just now adjusting to becoming a grandfather for the first time after his oldest daughter gave birth to his first grandchild. .

On August 9, Deiondra Sanders gave birth to a son named Que, the oldest of Deion’s children was revealed on Instagram.

“I love you so much Baby Que💙 I Love you so much Que💕,” Deiondra, 32, captioned a carousel of photos documenting her son’s birth. She added: “This journey has been long, but seeing your face, my sweet boy, has made every moment worth it. I am so happy to be your mum and I can’t wait to share a life full of love and adventure with you.”

Deion was the first to comment, writing: “Proud of you all.”

And even though football season is fast approaching, Coach Prime cherished the time he spent with his new grandson. “Being a grandfather for the first time is wonderful,” Deion tells PEOPLE exclusively while promoting his new partnership with California Almonds.

He then reveals that he saw and spoke to Que right before talking to PEOPLE. “And I said it for the first time. I just saw my grandson, said some things, laughed and all that, so it was wonderful because my daughter is still in the hospital,” said the father of five.

While the proud grandfather is still absorbing the news of the youngest addition to the extended Saunders family — after previously telling PEOPLE in April that “I haven’t digested the whole thing yet” — Deion is balancing it with all things coaching.

“We’re taking it one thing at a time. I love coaching these young people,” he says of the Buffaloes, who include sons Sheduer at linebacker and Shiloh at safety, as the team prepares to begin the 2024-25 season. against North Dakota State on Thursday, August 29.

The Buffaloes are coming off a difficult first season under Coach Prime, finishing the season 4-8 and ranked 12th overall.

This year, however, was full of expectations with Sheduer Sanders entering the season as a top quarterback, and this is also the last season Coach Prime will coach his two sons. “Eight of the 11 position coaches are from the NFL,” says Coach Prime. “We have Adalius Thomas who has played 10 years in the league as well as one of the assistants who helps out as well. So the formula is just to let those guys be who they are and not ask them to change anything.”

He adds, “They’re Hall of Famers and they’ve played a ton of years because of who they were. You want them to continue to be that person and give these kids guidance for their dreams, their hopes and their desires — and that’s the formula.”

As Deion navigated changes to his team and coaching staff, he also had to watch what his players consumed and how they took care of their bodies.

“They don’t know what they’re doing. They’re just taking something somebody gave them,” he says of the other teams, before noting that the California Almonds “keep me looking good.”

He adds: “You know they are healthy. If you do your homework and google it, you know they are incredibly healthy. I made a great recovery. I’m still in my prime and they keep me where I need to be.”

And when it comes to his team in general, Deion is positive about the outlook. “We look good,” he says. “We, like the whole staff and the team and everything else — having healthy snacks, healthy options are tremendous things for our young men.”
