Dennis Rodman was born Dennis Keith Rodman on May 13, 1961, in Trenton, New Jersey. Shirley and Philander Rodman, Jr. raised him. His father was an enlisted Air Force member who later served in the Vietnam War. When Dennis was young, his father abandoned his family and moved to the Philippines.
Rodman comes from a large family; according to his father, he has between 26 and 28 siblings on his father’s side. However, Rodman claims to have over 47 children, of which he is the oldest. After his father left, their mother was forced to work odd jobs to feed her family. She once worked four jobs at the same time.

Dennis Rodman was drafted by Detroit Pitson in 1986, and the team won 52 games that year, earning them a spot in the 1987 NBA Playoffs. Rodman was a consistent player in their next season, 1987-88, averaging 8.7 rebounds and 11.6 points. However, in 1988-89, he was on the bench and averaged 9.4 rebounds and 9.0 points in 27 minutes. The Pistons made it to the finals and defeated the Lakers.
