Derek Hough Says He’s in ‘Awe’ of Wife Hayley Erbert Following Craniectomy: ‘She Really Is a Miracle’

Derek Hough couldn’t be more proud of his wife Hayley Erbert.

The Dancing with the stars Judge, 38, said he was “in awe” of Erbert, 29, following her recent craniectomy while discussing her recovery at the film’s Los Angeles premiere This is me… now: a love storyin which he stars alongside Jennifer Lopez, on Tuesday.

“She’s amazing. When I married her, I knew she was strong, but I didn’t realize until now how strong she really is,” Hough said Party tonight.

“I’m just really in awe of her every day,” he continued. “She’s amazing. She really is a miracle and I really don’t throw that word around lightly, but she really is.”

Hough said he was “in awe” of wife Erbert after her recent surgeries.

On December 7, 2023, Erbert underwent an “emergency craniectomy” after suffering a cranial hematoma—a collection of blood cells inside the skull—during the pair’s Symphony of Dance tour stop in Washington, D.C. Erbert then underwent further surgery on December 20. to “replace a large portion of her skull” that was removed during a craniectomy.

Speaking about his wife’s surgeries, Hough shared ET, “It was a crazy time, but let me tell you something, it was an amazing and beautiful time, because all the little victories, triumphs, it’s just amazing.” “She is incredible,” he added.

Erbert’s emergency surgery came just three months after she married Hough in August 2023. Following her craniectomy, Hough regularly posted updates on her recovery on social media while thanking fans for their support.

A timeline of Hayley Erbert’s health scare and her ongoing recovery

Earlier this month, Hough and Erbert talked about “from the highest high to the lowest of the lowest” as they talked about their experience and her recovery in an emotional video posted on Instagram.

“It’s been wild … But I have to say that through this experience this woman has been incredible, and her perseverance and her acceptance of the whole situation, her strength, it’s been remarkable to witness firsthand,” Hough said. “She really is a miracle and it was and still is an amazing journey.”

Speaking for the first time since her craniectomy, Erbert shared, “To this day, I still have really good days and I still have really bad days — sometimes emotionally and physically — but I’m getting a lot better every day,” Erbert added. “There really is so much progress every day and I’m very grateful for that.”

The couple again thanked fans for their support as Erbert also revealed her short hair and the surgery scar on the top of her head.

“A new haircut, a new scar, a new bag of fluid on the side of my face, which should eventually go away,” she said, adding that after the surgery she has a “new outlook on life” and is “grateful to be alive and to be here to tell my story.”
