The couple prefers to keep their children out of the limelight, although they have shared several details about their family life over the years, including why they keep their private lives private.
“[Social media] it never felt natural to me. I know that it is necessary in my line of business and I absolutely have to when it is part of the contract. But a lot of people post about their kids and their husbands, and that’s never going to be the case for me,” Hannah explained in a 2019 interview. Editor magazine. “When you love something so much, you want to protect it more than anything in the world. And for me, it’s my relationship, it’s my children.”

Fans won’t find many photos of the kids on Derek’s social media either. While the baseball legend previously told PEOPLE that “every day is something new” in the Jeter household and that he’s “so proud of those little moments,” he rarely documents them online.
During an appearance on the site in February 2023 Tonight’s showDerek spoke about life as a dad to a little girl, calling it “controlled chaos”.
He added: “It’s school drop offs, drop offs, they do my nails, toenails, make up, lipstick. It’s the best thing I’ve ever experienced though, my girls. They’re the absolute best.”
But Derek is no longer just the girls’ dad. In September 2023, he spoke to PEOPLE about raising his son Kaius.
“It was different for me because I have a younger sister and then we had three girls. So having a boy is a little different for me,” he said. “But he’s been great so far.”

Fans learned about the couple’s first pregnancy in Hannah’s candid essay for Tribune for players — the sports media company Derek co-founded — in which she addressed the “special” bond she hopes to foster between Derek and their children.
“We want our children’s lives to be as ‘normal’ as possible. They will be born into such an extraordinary situation. They will have to be strong little people,” she wrote. “We don’t want them to be defined by their father’s name – for them, we want him to just be ‘dad’. That will be a part of him that the rest of the world won’t have, and it will be theirs.”
The expectant mother’s essay was published in February 2017, and six months later, she and Derek welcomed their first child together. Their eldest daughter, Bella Raine Jeter, was born on August 17, 2017.
Media appearances are rare for the Jeter children, but the family of five attended Derek’s Hall of Fame induction ceremony at Yankee Stadium in 2022. Bella even posed for solo father-daughter photos with Derek on the field and stood with him during his speech.
Ahead of the ceremony, the girls shared with their parents what they were most looking forward to — even though it had little to do with their dad and everything to do with trying the stadium food. “Are you guys excited to go to Yankee Stadium?” Hannah asked her children in a video shared on Derek’s Instagram. “That!” Bella cheered, to which Derek replied, “Yeah, what do you want to see at Yankee Stadium?”
“I want to eat!” Bella joked. When asked if they would do anything else, Story added, “Eat ice cream.”
Bella also seems to have a future in the sport. During his performance at Tonight’s showDerek discussed Bella’s budding tennis career.
“My wife played tennis, so we put the oldest one in tennis lessons when she was about 4 years old,” he said. “I was quite proud because she would actually be quite good for 15 minutes that she would focus on and then it would be drawing on the clay.”
He added that Bella “doesn’t lack self-confidence when it comes to sports.”
“One day we’re taking her to practice and I say, ‘Bella are you ready for tennis practice?’ And she says, ‘I don’t want to go,’ and I say, ‘That’s fine, we’ll find something else for you to do, but why don’t you want to go?’ ” he explained. “She says: ‘Dad, I already know how to play.’

The couple’s second daughter, Story Gray Jeter, was born on January 31, 2019.

Since hanging up his football boots, Derek has enjoyed father-daughter bonding with Story and her sisters. During the interview with in July 2022 Extradiscussed his new title of “Girl Dad.” “There’s a whole other side to me,” the former New York Yankee revealed, citing the growth of beauty supplies in his bathroom cabinet as an example. “I’m going to paint my nails and make up my face.” He added that girls also like to play dress-up with him.
Between manicures and makeovers, Derek shuttles back and forth between tennis and ballet classes. His kids, however, aren’t exactly thrilled to pick up a baseball bat yet.
Story and her siblings are also completely unaware of how famous their dad is, and Derek wouldn’t have it any other way. “They know I played for the Yankees. They see me on TV. They recognize me, especially during this documentary,” he explained, speaking of Captainan ESPN documentary about his MLB career. “But other than that, they have no idea and I like it that way.”
In a rare public appearance, Story stood with her father and sister Bella at the podium during Derek’s induction into the National Baseball Hall of Fame. Ahead of the event, she expressed her nerves about visiting Yankee Stadium for the first time in an adorable video.
“Do you want to go to the field?” Derek asked his daughters in the video, to which Story replied, “No, because I’m not a good baseball player.” After her dad reassured her that it was okay if she wasn’t a good player, Story said, “Because I don’t want to break my leg like you did.”
“I don’t think you need to worry about that, but thank you for your concern,” Derek replied, laughing.

For baby number three, the couple decided not to publicly announce what they were expecting. Instead, fans found out about their new bundle of joy via a tweet from Tribune for players. Their youngest daughter, River Rose Jeter, was born on December 2, 2021.
Like her older sisters, River didn’t appear often on her father’s social media; however, he talked endlessly about how much he loved being their dad. “My girls are the absolute best,” Derek told PEOPLE on the red carpet at the Turn 2 Foundation’s 25th Annual Dinner in 2021. “You know, if you hear that before you have kids, people will say, ‘Oh, wait until you have your own.’ , but it’s really true.”
The former professional athlete added that it was “wonderful” to see his daughters “learning something new every day”.
Often that “something new” involves arts and crafts projects, a passion passed down from Hannah’s mother. “I grew up in a small community, my mom was a teacher, we had a lot of arts and crafts,” Hannah said Editor in 2019. “I think I’m raising my kids the way my mom raised me — to be outside with nature and animals, trying not to be on them so much, giving them safe places to explore and use their imaginations.”
It’s also not uncommon for Derek to return home to his family “covered in paint and glue,” she added.
