Dexter: Original Sin's Dark Teaser Promises a Look at the Makings of an Iconic Killer

Dexter is ready to have a damn good time again.

The prolific serial killer returns to the small screen with Dexter: Original Sin, premiering on Paramount+ with Showtime on Friday, December 13. This prequel series, starring Patrick Gibson as Dexter Morgan, will follow the iconic character as he “transitions from college student to avenging serial killer.”

“When his bloodthirsty urges can no longer be ignored, Dexter must learn to channel his inner darkness,” reads the synopsis. “With the guidance of his father, Harry (Christian Slater), he adopts a Code that helps him find and kill people who deserve to be eliminated from society without getting on the radar of law enforcement. This is a special challenge for young Dexter as he begins his forensics internship with the Miami Police Department.”

In the first teaser for the crime drama, Gibson steps out of an elevator as narrator Michael C. Hall loudly declares, “I’m a killer.” Hall starred as Dexter in the original Showtime series.

“But I wasn’t born this way,” he continues, as the teaser briefly cuts to CSI chief Tanya Martin (Sarah Michelle Gellar) and Harry. “I was made by my history and the people around me.”

With bass-heavy club music blaring in the background, the clip features a more than stellar cast, including Christina Milian and Patrick Dempsey, as it weaves in clips of high school brawls.

“They say it takes a village to raise a killer,” Hall adds, as Dexter brandishes a slotted knife. The teaser ends with the camera fixed on Dexter – with a grim expression on his face – before cutting to the title of the series in the color of blood on the screen.

The casting of Gellar, Slater and Dempsey in particular was a deliberate decision by network executives to help “capture” the 1990s era in which the show is set, PEOPLE reported in June. To achieve this, they chose actors who appeared in notable projects in the 1990s and are still stars today.

Dexter: Original Sin follows the run of eight seasons Dexter, starring Hall and Jennifer Carpenter, which was shown from 2006 to 2013, and spawned a miniseries Dexter: New blood.

The original series won four Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series in 2010 and Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series in 2010 for John Lithgow’s portrayal of Arthur Mitchell. Hall also won the 2010 Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actor in a TV Drama.
