Dharminder Singh was shot dead on April 5, 2022, following a clash between rival groups of his village Daun Kalan and Theri village in front of Panjab University in Patiala. He was reportedly pursued by rival groups after holding a meeting with them on behalf of villagers at a dhaba outside the campus. He was later shot dead on the road outside the university. Dharminder Singh, president of Daun Kalan village kabaddi club, is also politically active. He left the Shiromani Akali Dal on the eve of the February 2022 Punjab Assembly elections and campaigned for the Aam Aadmi Party in Ghanauer. He canvassed for Gurlal Ghanaur, another kabaddi player. According to sources, two of the accused are Tejbir Singh and Harbir Singh, and they were accompanied by another accused. The group got into an argument while drinking at a local restaurant and the deceased reportedly attacked them before they manhandled him. The couple later allegedly returned with some items and attacked him. One of them pulled out a gun and shot Dharminder. Briefing about the incident, Patiala Police Commissioner Harpal Singh said,
The incident happened around 11.30pm on Tuesday when two groups got into a heated argument. The argument became violent and someone shot and injured the victim, who died at the scene. “
He also added,
The investigation found that another college student named Harbir Singh had a personal grudge against the victim. Urban Estate police have registered an FIR against four suspects in the case. Investigation is on to arrest the accused. “

The Dharminder Singh murder case is linked to another murder case of international kabaddi player Sandeep Singh Nangal Ambian, which also took place in Punjab nearly a month ago. He was also shot dead by four assailants on March 15, 2022, in Jalandhar.
After reviewing the incidents, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann directed Punjab Police Commissioner V K Bhawra to constitute an Anti-Gangster Task Force (AGTF) headed by an ADGP-level officer. Mann, who chaired a high-level meeting of police forces, stressed the need to eradicate organized crime as a top priority. He told police that the police force would have the necessary personnel, equipment and information technology as well as appropriate funding to disrupt the nexus that has spread in the drug trade and kabaddi movement. Cricketer-cum-politician Navjot Singh Sidhu took to Twitter to question the law and order situation in Punjab. He tweeted,
There is a complete breakdown of law and order in Punjab while the chief minister is busy seeking votes in the cool breeze of Himachal Pradesh. Two more cold-blooded murders took place in Patiala today. On average, 3-4 murders occur every day and people are in a state of fear. The best way to fulfill your duty is to be exempted from it. “
