Diane von Furstenberg's New Target Collaboration Is Almost Here and the Icon Says, 'It Screams DVF'

Set your alarm for March 23 because this collection will be sold out

When Target revealed in February that its next design collaboration would be with legendary fashion designer and philanthropist Diane von Furstenberg, we immediately sent a calendar invitation around the office for the March 23 launch date.

And after taking a sneak peek at the 200-piece range of clothing for women, girls and babies, plus fashion accessories, beauty, home decor and even bespoke furniture, all with the brand’s signature colorful prints and patterns, we’re building on that invitation calendar to the alarm in the middle of the night because it is a commodity that good. We’re talking about an adorable $50 wrap dress that looks and feels like the real thing, okay.

“It’s very happy, it’s very fresh,” DVF, 77, told a room of fashion editors at an early preview of the collection Tuesday in New York. “It screams ‘DVF’. You absolutely cannot deny the name behind it.” DVF revealed that while she and Target had been talking about a collaboration for years (she’s been a fan of the retailer’s designer collections since the first one with architect Michael Graves in 1999), her granddaughter, DVF co-president Talita von Furstenberg, 24, revived the partnership.

“Talita actually ran this whole program. It’s really, really sweet,” she said at the event. “They went to the archive and pulled out the prints, reduced and enlarged them, changed the colors and created a whole world that goes from the kitchen to the bathroom, then sportswear, women’s and children’s.” (DVF is especially excited about the shower curtain.)

PEOPLE caught up with DVF and TVF as they walked us through the collection (check out some of our favorites below!). Here’s what they had to say about working together, celebrating the 50th anniversary of the wrap dress and defining success.

What do you think Talita learned from working with you?

DVF: Well, the only thing you have to be sure of is that you don’t act like you’re teaching. You can only teach by example. Then they look at you and do it.

And what did you learn from her?

DVF: That’s a good question. She was very helpful yesterday. I just made a documentary. [Editor’s note: the Hulu documentary drops later this year] and she watched it this weekend. I asked her what they had included, since they had filmed and interviewed so many people over the past two years.

TVF: I wanted to make sure they captured the essence of her spirit today, which is really helping people and connecting people. She’ll bring two people together and then all of a sudden they start a Fortune 500 company, or she brings two people together and they save the organization. The list goes on and on. I wanted to make sure they had that spirit.

This dress celebrates its 50th anniversary this year and is still a staple for women during some of their biggest moments in life, whether it’s an interview or a date. What makes it the perfect “milestone” piece?

DVF: First of all, the fabric is really soft and really lovely, and it lasts forever. And then, the trick with my prints is movement. All prints have movement. In nature, any animal, zebra, leopard, fish or anything in nature, when you see a pattern, it is always movement. And when you wear a body-hugging dress and add this movement, you look good and feel catty. A woman once said something, which is the perfect thing, she said, “It’s a dress you wear a man in and his mother doesn’t mind.”

TVF: I think it’s also effortless sexiness. They are so comfortable. And it’s so easy that when you grab it from your closet, you know you look good. The feeling is very empowering. And when you are experiencing these special moments, the most important thing is to feel confident and happy with yourself.

You created the dress when you were 27 years old. If you could go back in time, what would you say to your 27-year-old self?

DVF: [That] I lived. When I was 27, I was a single mother with two children. I had a huge job and had no idea what I was doing. I made it up every day. And so, how I juggled, I don’t know. And I probably wasn’t the best this and the best that. I wasn’t the best at anything. But somehow I managed. And when I look back and see my family, my children, my grandchildren, I say, “Well, I did a good job.”

How do you define success at this stage of your career?

DVF: Success is being true to yourself. You have ups, you have downs, you have this, you have that. But being true to yourself is freedom.
