Warning: This post contains spoilers for the season 1 finale Landman.
It’s hard to imagine Landman without Jon Hamm’s Monty Miller, but fans may have to start.
The Paramount+ series — which features Billy Bob Thornton’s Tommy Norris handling matters on the ground for Monty’s big oil corporation — ended its first season on Sunday, January 12. Although Monty’s health was threatened in the penultimate episode, the finale even upped the ante.
After being hospitalized for a heart attack in episode 8, it is revealed that Monty has undergone his third bypass surgery and is in need of a heart transplant. But the surgery didn’t seem to go as planned in the finale, as the final minutes of the episode saw Monty’s wife Cami (Demi Moore) and his two daughters crying as they gathered around the CEO, who looked lifeless in a hospital bed.

Although it was not clear whether Monty’s loved ones were mourning his death or worried about his health, many fans took the last emotional look at the family as confirmation that Monty did not survive. Now, Landman co-creator Christian Wallace is in question.
“It’s safe to say that Monty has passed away,” Wallace, who created the “Boomtown” podcast that inspired the series, told Variety. “But when you take one main player off the board, it opens up opportunities for other players – and I think that’s all I can say at this point.”

However, Monty’s death presents an “incredible opportunity” for Moore’s character, Wallace told TVLine, who some fans thought was underused in the first season.
“Dema’s character in this first season was a bit of a second fiddle to Monty, at least in his role as president of M-Tex Oil. He’s the one who decides and has to make these big decisions, so he’s really the one who’s thrown into the fire and frankly he’s kind of trying to protect his family from the stress he’s going through, which ultimately plays a role in his death,” Wallace told the newspaper. “And so his death is kind of an amazing opportunity for Cami to play a bigger role in this world.”

Another important question is what does Monty’s death mean for Tommy? He agreed to take over M-Tex Oil, according to his boss’s last wishes, but what would the company look like without Tommy in the field every day?
Before his death, Monty named Tommy VP of Operations – and, much to the chagrin of the oilmen, named Rebecca Falcone (Kayla Wallace) VP of Research – and then his lawyer revealed that he had named Tommy as M.-Tex’s successor, and executor of his estate. , in his will.
Asked about his character’s fate in a potential second season, Thornton, 69, said Tommy “probably doesn’t want” to take over the company, “but he knows he has to.” “I think he owes it to his old friend and boss, because that’s what he wanted,” he said The Hollywood Reporter. “And I also think that, just because of his knowledge of the business, he knows that he’s the one who needs to do it. He doesn’t want to put the suit on, but he knows he has to.”

How Billy Bob Thornton appeared in a Last Minute Cameo in 1883 Made into the lead role in Taylor Sheridan’s film Landman
Hamm has yet to comment on his character’s fate, but in March he spoke to PEOPLE about the Paramount+ series, which he called “an interesting look at what happens when it comes to how we get the things that make up our cars and our lives and our planes and everything in our modern world is going.”
“There’s a lot of back and forth, a lot of intrigue and things like that,” he said. “It’s Taylor Sheridan and it’s obviously very well written. It’s very well researched. It’s a story very well told.”
Hamm, 53, noticed that, too Landman was a “good story” and that he thought “people would enjoy it”.
“It has Billy Bob Thornton and Demi Moore, so the cast is great and it was great fun to work on,” he added. “And obviously, Taylor Sheridan is in charge of everything, so it’s a great project.”
