Dipa Karmakar is an Indian rhythmic gymnast. She came into the spotlight when she won a bronze medal at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. She is a recipient of the Padma Shri, India’s fourth highest civilian award. For her contribution to sports, she was also awarded the Arjuna Award in 2015 and the Rajiv Gandhi Khair Ratna Award in 2016.

Dipa Karmakar was born on 9 August 1993 in Agartala (30 years; as of 2023). Her zodiac sign is Leo. She received her education at Abhoynagar Nazrul Smriti Vidyalaya in Agartala and attended Women’s College for her BA. Dipa started practicing gymnastics when she was six years old. When she started gymnastics, she had flat feet and was reluctant to do gymnastics at first, but her father inspired her to take up the sport and stick with it. Her father worked as a weightlifting coach with the Sports Authority of India and wanted Deepa to become famous in the sports world. She takes training from coach Biswaswar Nandi. Karmakar trained without any equipment for eight months before competing at the 2014 Commonwealth Games. However, things changed after the federation arranged a training camp for her. Later, the GoSports Foundation supported her career in gymnastics.

Profession

Deepa started her career as a gymnast in 2011 when she represented Tripura at the Indian National Games. Next, she competed at the 2014 Commonwealth Games, where she won a bronze medal in the women’s vault final. Karmakar was honored by Sachin Tendulkar at the CWG celebration ceremony. She has maintained consistent performance in different events and competitions. Kamaka again won bronze medals at the Asian Gymnastics Championships and the World Gymnastics Championships. Thereafter, she participated in the trials for the Rio Olympics and after passing, received Rs 30 lakh from the Sports Ministry for training under the Target Olympics Scheme (TOPS). In 2016, she qualified for the Rio Olympics finals, paving the way for Indian teenagers to pursue a career in gymnastics. In his nine-year career, Karmakar won a total of 77 medals, 67 of which were gold medals at state, national and world championships. Dipa is one of only 5 women to complete the Produnova (difficulty level 7) vault. She also set a record for the competition’s highest score of 15.100.

  • Surprisingly, she was not the first choice for the Indian Olympic team in Rio as she failed to book herself an Olympic spot. The selection was through the World Championships, but she failed to reach the podium or win any medals in the event.
  • Dipa was afraid of falling, even stepping on the crossbar. So she began practicing balance and recording her attempts on the balance beam. As of this weekend, the total reached 127.
