Given the hype around the highly anticipated live-action version of The Little Mermaid, it’s clear as of late that Disney loves its live-action remakes. From Aladdin to Mulan to even Dumbo, Disney is currently focusing on re-visiting classic and nostalgia stories and putting an updated spin on them.
While Disney has been known to also shine a light on villain origin stories with movies like Cruella and Maleficent, fans also desperately crave stories surrounding the original, and newer, Disney princesses. Although it seems that Disney has been booked and busy with remakes featuring the princesses, there are still a few that fans want to see have their films later down the line.
Tiana (The Princess And The Frog)
Though the cartoon film is relatively new and Disney will probably focus on remaking more older stories, fans are still hopeful that a live-action film for The Princess and the Frog is shortly. Between the riveting story, vintage costumes, and vivid imagery, many fans believe a healthy mix of CGI and real actors could make the story come alive. However, it could be a while with the new Princess and the Frog series on the way.
In the Reddit thread r/disneyprincess, u/That_Juggernaut4820 asked, “Will there be a live-action movie of The Princess and the Frog?” While some users disclosed that a remake probably wouldn’t come anytime soon, user iwishicouldteleport entertained this idea saying, “I’m sure they will eventually… I feel like it would have some good action scenes.”
Aurora (Sleeping Beauty)
Considering the film’s evil villain Maleficent got her own movie fairly recently, this means fans are even more in need of a Sleeping Beauty live-action film. Between the magical CGI possibilities with Aurora’s dresses and the possibility of Angelina Jolie reprising her role, fans could not be more excited to potentially get such an exciting movie.
Original poster u/Steelquill submitted their own plot idea for an upcoming live-action take on Sleeping Beauty in the r/fixingmovies thread, leaving readers in awe and excited for a possible remake in the future. Redditor HSudev521 commented, “Okay wow, this made me tear up” while a now-deleted commenter made it clear what many fans want from Disney if a remake ever does happen: “This right here is how you both update a concept with new ideas and maintain the themes of the original plot.”
Pocahontas (Pocahontas)
Though Pocahontas has more recently been ridiculed for its historical inaccuracy, some fans believe that a live-action remake could help Disney right its wrongs. Many viewers think a remake could be a great second chance for Disney to get it right and change the narrative in a way that authentically honors Native American culture.
User kyubeydaisuki asked the Reddit community if there are any Disney animated movies they would like to see be made into live-action, with the Redditor even sharing his own opinion: “Personally, I would be interested in a Pocahontas live-action movie… I might go and see it just to see how historically accurate it got.” Although it could be tricky, fans could see Disney being up for the challenge by taking the opportunity to do some historical research.
Rapunzel (Tangled)
A live-action Tangled is already in talks, with fans buzzing with excitement. The unexpectedly popular animated film took the world by storm immediately upon its release, and there’s no doubt that the remake will do the same. Considering a few films have attempted to tell stories surrounding Rapunzel, the execution wouldn’t be too difficult, and fans can already sense a special magic twist that Disney puts into all of their projects.
Now-deleted Reddit user comments, “Love the idea for a live-action but I also want a Tangled 2.” Safe to say that no matter which film could come first, fans loved Tangled in general and will be lined up to see either one!
Merida (Brave)
Even though Brave didn’t receive the mainstream popularity that the other animated princess movies had, fans agree that Merida has to be included in the hypothetical Disney princess remake movement. On the surface, fans could see how the story would be the easiest to recreate, and as per usual, Disney would have the opportunity to put a magical spin on the curse plotline with incredible CGI work.
Despite Brave being an underrated movie for Disney, some fans even go as far as to say that Merida is the best Disney princess and a true hero, like Redditor u/gonzo4209 in the r/unpopularopinion Reddit thread. Commenter MorlaTheAcientOne is thrilled to find someone else who agrees and enthusiastically comments, “I’m with you on this! I love the movie so much.” Popular or not, it’s undeniable that Disney fans would not be opposed to this movie getting a live-action version shortly.
Snow White (Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs)
Though a live-action version of Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs is already in the works, this film has been highly anticipated for a while. As one of the oldest Disney princess stories, viewers have always been excited for a possible remake with real people and CGI effects, aside from the off-brand Snow White films from the past decade.
It has been said that West Side Story star Rachel Zegler will be playing Snow White while Gal Gadot is rumored to be playing the Evil Queen, and Redditor moifauve just can’t wait, saying “I’m excited for this, I wanna see what Gal can really do!” Though this film is the only confirmed one on this list, fans are nonetheless excited to see how it turns out in a few years.
Moana (Moana)
With Moana being one of the most recent animated Disney movies, a remake is not likely to happen anytime soon. However, that doesn’t stop fans from dreaming about a remake featuring one of the most heroic Disney princesses! Though it would be challenging to film certain underwater action scenes, there is no limit for Disney or their VFX team for that matter.
Fans have one important request, though, if a remake were to happen shortly, and that is for Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson to return as Maui. Though Redditor u/MTPokitz posted a meme of Jason Mamoa playing Maui in the hypothetical remake, user Snozz_Cumber0906 commented, “If Moana is live-action, Dwayne Johnson is gonna play it thank you very much.”
Anna And Elsa (Frozen)
With Frozen being so wildly popular, fans believe without a doubt a live-action remake is in Disney’s future. However, with the film being relatively new in the Disney universe, viewers believe it will be a little while before the story is revisited.
The Disney community on Reddit is constantly buzzing with fan casts for this inevitable remake that many viewers are wanting, just later down the line when the nostalgia kicks in for the original story. In a thread sharing Kristen Bell’s wishes for the live-action film to take place in at least 15 years, Reddit user gorampardos comments, “I don’t mind [remakes.] I like the idea of having two versions of the same story.”
