Disney's Chandler Kinney Was 'Just Sobbing' After Recording Hit Zombies Songs: 'Convinced That I Could Not Sing'

Chandler Kinney’s breakout role was as a singing werewolf in the Disney franchise zombies – but the actress said she struggled with impostor syndrome while filming the musical.

Kinney said she had never had a singing role before playing werewolf pack leader Will in the 2020 sequel to the supernatural musical. zombies series — and was “terrified,” as Taylor Lautner and Taylor “Tay” Lauter told the Nov. 6 episode of their podcast Grip.

“I was convinced that I couldn’t sing, that I couldn’t hold a tune, that I was, like, deaf,” said Kinney, 24. “I should never open my mouth.”

Kinney, who is currently competing in his 33rd season Dancing with the starsshe shared that after she recorded “Flesh & Bone,” her first song, “I remember… walking into the studio bathroom and just sobbing. I locked myself in the stall and just, like, let it all out. I thought it was terrible. I thought I was going to get fired.”

“It’s really just talking about the insecurities in our heads and how they can grow and get out of hand.” she said, adding that overcoming her fear of singing “is actually part of why I wanted to work zombies movies.”

“The whole singing element was a big mental block for me,” she said. “I knew I wanted to run towards that fear, not from it.

“I got over that mental hurdle, but it was really hard,” Kinney said — adding that it’s “crazy now” because the “Flesh & Bone” video “has so many views” — specifically, 256 million views — on YouTube.

“It’s crazy,” Kinney said. “It’s crazy. Children love music.”

“Does that make you feel better or do you still feel like imposter syndrome?” Tay asked.

“Definitely a little bit of impostor syndrome that I’m still getting over, which is in everything,” Kinney said. “But I feel a little more comfortable. You know, I mean, even being in the studio space and being behind the microphone and listening to my voice, those are all baby steps that I’ve learned to acknowledge, and then also, let them be victories.”

Still, she added, “Now when I get in the studio … if I can block out the negative voice, I’m like, okay. That was a victory. you know It’s really a process, but now it’s three movies and a whole animated series [and] it’s still something I feel a little bit in my body when I walk in.”
