Dog Rescued After Falling Off 50-Foot Cliff at Quarry in Connecticut: He's 'Very Lucky'

A dog was rescued after falling off a 50-foot cliff in a Connecticut quarry.

The North Canaan Animal Shelter received a phone call earlier this week from a man who said he heard a dog barking while walking near the quarry, according to a Facebook post by animal control officer Lindsay Burr.

Joining her sister and a group of quarry workers, Burr went to the bottom of the area to locate the puppy, and although they could hear him barking, they were unable to find him.

The shelter then contacted a local resident, who used a drone to see if they could detect the dog’s heat signature. The attempt, however, was unsuccessful, Burr wrote.

The dog’s owner later contacted North Canaan Animal Control, who discovered the dog — a 30-pound terrier mix named Rippy — had recently gone missing in the area.

Eventually, workers near the quarry reported hearing the barking again while on their lunch break, Burr wrote, and called Animal Control to retrieve the animal.

Along with the North Canaan Animal Shelter, members of the Northwest Rope Rescue Team, North Canaan Fire Company and North Canaan Ambulance assisted in the rescue. Two members of the rope rescue team, Burr said, “threw themselves approximately 50 feet to the dog.”

Rippy was then caught and safely returned to the cliff, and his owner was later called to bring him home, according to a social media post.

“I want to thank everyone involved in this crazy rescue,” Burr wrote. “Rippy’s mom thanks everyone too!!”

“He’s one very lucky dog to have survived the fall off one of those cliffs!! The other animals weren’t so lucky!” she added. “I wouldn’t have made it home for sure without all of you!!”
