Dona Roy, better known as Dona Ganguly, is an Indian Odissi dancer. She is the wife of former Indian cricketer and 39th BCCI president Sourav Ganguly.

Dona Ganguly was born on Sunday, August 22, 1976 in Behala, Kolkata (age 47 years 2023). Her zodiac sign is Leo. She was educated at Loreto Convent School, Calcutta. She began dancing at the age of three with Amala Shankar (an Indian ballerina and wife of the famous choreographer Uday Shankar). Later, she received training in Odissi under the guidance of Guru Giridhari Nayek. After that, she started learning dance from the master Kelucharan Mohapatra. This was the most important development for her. Under his guidance, Donna was given many opportunities to hone her skills and prove her talents.

The love story of Dona-Souraf
Donna has known Sourav since childhood. Because they are all neighbors. Their love story began during their school days when Sourav used to play badminton outside his house. His shuttlecocks often end up in Donna’s yard, and she gets a chance to spot Sourav while returning them. Sourav, on the other hand, would pass by Dona’s school just to catch a glimpse of her. After the two grew up, they were still in love as before. However, their families are sworn enemies and do not approve of their relationship. Despite the odds, Sourav never missed one of Donna’s dance performances and she made sure to stay at all his competitions.

Once, after Sourav returned to Kolkata from the Indian cricket team’s tour of England, he took Donna to the registration office to marry her. As there were many people waiting at the registration office with garlands, Sourav took her to his friend’s place where they got married and Dona Roy became Dona Ganguly. After the marriage, the couple returned to their respective homes and kept it secret for a long time. Donna’s parents were furious when they learned of the marriage. After some time, the situation calmed down and the two held a formal wedding on February 1, 1997.

Donna started her dance career under the guidance of her mentor Kelucharan Mohapatra and participated in several dance programs in India and abroad. At the beginning of her career, Dona even accompanied her mentor with a Pakhavaj (barrel-shaped double-headed drum).

She has performed at many dance festivals in India including Dover Lane Festival in Kolkata, River Festival in Kolkata, Bharat Bhavan in Bhopal, Beach Festival in Dika and Haldia “Haldia Utsov”. Donna has also performed on several international dance tours including dance performances at the 15th North American Bengali Conference in New York and the Indian Nile Festival in Egypt.

Apart from acting, she also teaches dance at the dance school “Diksha Manjari”. She is the Head of Odissi Department at Bharati Vidya Bhavan School and Techno India School, Kolkata. Dona is an ‘A’ grade artist at Doordarshan.

Dona Ganguly owns Diksha Manjari, a classical dance school. The school was inaugurated by popular singer and music director Lata Mangeshkar. Dona started this institution to spread various forms of Indian classical dance among the new generation. The school has more than 2,000 students and focuses on teaching dance, swimming, yoga and karate.

- In 1995, then-San Francisco Mayor Frank M. Jordan proclaimed June 9 as “Donal Roy Day” in San Francisco.
