Biography of Dorian Yates
Dorian Andrew Mientjez Yates was born on April 19, 1962 in Walmley, Warwickshire, England. His father died of a heart attack when he was thirteen. Yates has had a passion for bodybuilding since he was a teenager, and trained at local gyms.
Yates’ family moved to Birmingham, UK, after his father died, where he began working out and considered bodybuilding to be his full-time career.

Career
Dorian Yates has won most of the competitions he has competed in, including 15 major bodybuilding competitions and two second place finishes. From 1992 to 1997, he won all the competitions in which he competed.
Throughout his professional career, Yates suffered from chronic and acute injuries, including torn triceps and biceps. Despite the injury, he won the title of Mr. Olympia in 1997 just three weeks before his final competition. His win sparked debate among critics who felt his runner-up deserved to win.
Yates preferred High-Intensity Training (HIT) because it provided maximum muscle stimulation in a short period of time, allowing him to avoid lengthy training sessions. Arthur Jones and Mike Mentzer popularized this type of training.
He was known as “The Shadow” because he would disappear for long periods of time only to reappear and win major bodybuilding competitions. He also turned down several major additional contracts and did not like to give interviews to keep his personal life private.
Considered one of the first “mass monsters” in bodybuilding, Yates was bashed for being one of the first prominent bodybuilders to show off his bloated stomach. He trained at an extreme level all year, even if he didn’t compete in any events, which generally weakened the body.
Yates bought Temple Gym in Birmingham in 1987 after retiring from professional bodybuilding. He later opened four Temple Gyms in various locations across the UK. In 1994, with Mike Mentzer and Ray Mentzer, he founded Heavy Duty Inc., which sold sportswear and books related to bodybuilding.
Yates founded CNP Professional, a bodybuilding supplement company, with Kerry Kayes. After several years of collaboration, he left the company to start his own brand, Dorian Yates Ultimate Formulas, which offered a line of protein and weight gain supplements.
In 2010, he founded the company EU Peptides, which sells peptides, hormones and other prohormone nutritional supplements. The following year, he founded DY Nutrition, a company that specialized in pre-workout formulas and produced several workout DVDs.
