dr. Albert Shun, a pioneer in medicine, fought valiantly to perform the first liver transplants in children in Australia and was able to save the lives of thousands of children as a result. “In the old days before transplant, you could (have) a 20-30% long-term survival rate, and now we’re looking at over 90%,” Shun told Langdon.
Some of his operations lasted up to 27 hours, and one of them – in which he used a ping-pong ball in the operating room to save a patient’s life – even served as the basis for an episode of Grey’s Anatomy.
As for the new idea, he added: “Whatever it takes to save a life.” She broke down in tears in front of the A Current Affair host as she recalled some of those “crazier” moments, especially considering how it must have felt for his parents to believe in him. Shun, who spoke very little English, immigrated to Australia when he was just 10 years old.
Despite saving more than 500 transplant patients, he attributed his success to modern medicine and teamwork. Although there were many patients, Shun said that he still remembers many of them, and many of them are grateful to him for the help he gave them.
One of those young patients he operated on was Libby Mutimer, who was just two years old and was one of Shun’s first liver transplant recipients in 1988. Mutimer’s current mother said of the surgeon: “I don’t think he understood well the magnitude and impact they have”.
As a baby, Aidan’s parents claimed they came “very close” to losing him and were told very early on that nothing could be done to help their premature son. But according to Naomi, Shun and his colleagues came up with a plan to carry out the transplant two months later.
Shun was chosen to lead the large multinational medical team that successfully separated conjoined twins in India in 2012, two 11-month-old girls who shared a liver, due to his penchant for pushing boundaries.
