Sankarasubramanian K was born in 1964 (age 59; as of 2023) in a small village in Tamil Nadu, India. In 1986, he obtained a degree in Physics from Bangalore University. He holds a PhD in Physics from University of Bangalore and Indian Institute of Astrophysics, Bangalore.

He is a senior solar scientist at UR Rao Satellite Center (URSC), Bangalore. Most of his research involves solar magnetic fields, optics, and instrumentation. He has made significant contributions to many ISRO missions, including AstroSat, Chandrayaan-1 and Chandrayaan-2. He is also the head of the URSC Space Astronomy Group (SAG), which develops science payloads for missions such as ISRO’s Aditya-L1 and XPoSat. He was designated as the principal investigator of the X-ray payload on India’s first solar exploration mission, Aditya-L1. He also leads the Aditya-L1 Scientific Working Group, which has members from various institutions in India dedicated to solar energy science research. On September 2, 2023, Aditya L1 was launched from the Satish Dhawan Space Center in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh.
