Born in India, Dr. Shefali is a New York-based clinical psychologist who speaks primarily about conscious parenting and mindful living.
Wiki/Biography
Dr. Shefali was born in Mumbai in 1972 (49 years old in 2021). She completed her early education in India. In 1993, at the age of 21, she left India and came to the CIIS campus in the Haight Ashbury district of San Francisco to pursue her higher studies. According to her, this step brought a huge change in her life. Talking about this, she said in an interview,
My true awakening happened when I left India to study the Drama Therapy course at CIIS, where I discovered the power of meditation and mindfulness, and the journey of self-awareness and introspection truly taught me that we are not who we think we are. The conditioning of our childhood does not define us. I learned that shedding the past and entering the present moment, fully enjoying the present moment, is the most important journey we can take.”
She received her Master’s degree from the California Institute for Integrative Studies (1993) and pursued her PhD in Clinical Psychology from Teachers College, Columbia University (2003 – 2008). Initially, she studied Eastern philosophy and then went on to study Western psychology. Later, she combined the teachings of both. This fusion of East and West has made her influential worldwide and unique in the field of providing mindfulness-based psychology to families around the world.

It’s a practice of developing the understanding that this lack, this sense of incompleteness stems from false beliefs that we inherited from childhood, unconsciously created by our parents. They pushed that belief on us, we lived with it, and then we pushed it on our children. Breaking that chain, reorganizing ourselves, and developing new belief systems—I call it a revolution. The old ways are not serving us well. This lack of self-love is not serving us well.”
