Dr. Sunil Shroff

Dr. Sunil Shroff is an Indian urologist, transplant surgeon and social entrepreneur. Sunil is an advocate for organ donation in India and the founder and managing trustee of the MOHAN Foundation, a non-profit organization that has been promoting organ donation and transplantation in India since 1997.

Wiki/Biography

Dr. Sunil Shroff was born in Sahibganj, Bihar in 1953 (67 years old in 2020) and grew up in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. He studied at the Central Public Hospital, Girnagar, Chennai from 1965 to 1970. He then obtained his MBBS and MSc degrees from Prince of Wales Medical College (now Patna Medical College) and went to the UK for further studies in 1983. There, he was awarded the title of Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons (FRCS) in 1986 and subsequently specialised in Urology, Andrology and Renal Transplantation at the London Institute of Urology and Nephrology. He then completed his postgraduate course in Urology at University College London (UCL) and began his medical career.

Profession

After completing his formal education in the field of medicine, he held several senior positions in the UK including Lecturer, Registrar and Senior Registrar at St. Peter’s Hospital, Middlesex Hospital and Royal London Hospital, London before returning to India in 1995. Upon his return to India, he served as the Head of the newly established Urology and Renal Transplantation Department at Sri Ramachandra Medical College and Research Institute (SRMC & RI), Porur, Chennai from 1995 to 2015. During his tenure there, he trained 18 Urologists and 40 Allied Health Specialists along with numerous other nurses over the years. In April 2015, he started working as a Senior Consultant Urologist and Transplant Surgeon at Madras Medical Mission Hospital.

Mohan Foundation

Sunil Shroff founded the MOHAN Foundation in 1996 and started operations in August 1997. By providing counselling and promoting organ and tissue donation, Dr. Shroff’s NGO has done a revolutionary work in India and has helped as many as 11,609 lives as of 2020. The initiative started in Chennai and has now spread across India, with offices in Jaipur, Nagpur, Chandigarh, Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, Hyderabad, and Chennai as of 2020.

Working in medical information technology

  • He is the founder and editor-in-chief of www.medindia.net, one of India’s leading healthcare websites dedicated to providing reliable, accurate, timely and personalized health information to consumers, physicians and healthcare professionals worldwide. All services of the website are free of charge.
  • He founded the Indian Organ Transplant Registry (www.transplantindia.com) to collect data related to organ transplants from various centers in the country.
  • Dr. Shroff, along with a group of other physicians, founded the Indian Society for Computers in Medicine; a unique Indian society that aims to encourage the use of computers in medical sciences for better patient care and lower treatment costs.
