Drew Barrymore cries as she breaks silence over talk show controversy: what she said

Drew Barrymore issued a public apology to unions, writers and anyone hurt by her decision to continue filming The Drew Barrymore Show during the ongoing strike.

Sharing the video on Instagram, Drew didn’t caption the post but left the comments open for followers to share their thoughts; and Will & Grace star Debra Messing was among those who asked Drew to reconsider.

“Now you can choose to stop production. You can choose to pay your employees as well as other talk show hosts who have stood in solidarity with the writers. At stake are the jobs and livelihoods of thousands of union members (exponentially more than those who work) on your show) and the future our beloved industry. I hope you will consider,” Debra wrote.

In the video, Drew began, “I believe there is nothing I can do or say at this point to make it okay,” she began. “I wanted to take the decision so it wasn’t a PR protected situation and I take full responsibility for my actions. I know there’s nothing I can do to make this okay for those who aren’t okay with it, fully accept that, I i completely understand.

“There are so many reasons why this is so complex and I want everyone to know that my intentions were never to upset or hurt anyone — that’s not me,” she continued. “I’ve been through so many ups and downs in life, and this is one of them. I apologize deeply to the writers, I apologize deeply to the unions, I apologize deeply.”

“Since launching Live in the Pandemic, I’ve just wanted to make a show that’s there for people in vulnerable times, I weighed the scales and thought, ‘If we could continue through the global pandemic and everything the world has been through until 2020, why would that leave us alongside?’

“I just want to put one foot in front of the other and make a show that’s there for people regardless of anything else that’s going on in the world, because then I think we all need something that wants to be very real, in very real times. So that is my ‘why’.”

The statement comes after a week of outrage, following her decision to return to production on her CBS talk show.

Drew continues to claim that the show complies with all rules – including not “discussing or promoting film and television that is defaced of any kind” – but the show itself is considered an exempt show because its writers are covered by WGA contracts.
