Aaron Rodgers Calls Achilles Injury ‘One of the Toughest’ Moments of His Life: ‘A Lot of Tears’

Four days after tearing his left Achilles, New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers is opening up about how he handled the season-ending injury.

“It hit me like a ton of bricks for 24 hours,” Rodgers, 39, said during an interview with The Pat McAfee Show on Friday. “There were moments of just sobbing.” “There was a lot of anger, like why? Why is this happening?” Rodgers added.

Rodgers said he knew right away he tore his Achilles tendon while trying to avoid a tackle during the first game of the Jets’ season opener Monday night against the Buffalo Bills. The injury led to four games in Rodgers’ long-awaited debut in New York, where he was traded this season after 17 years with the Green Bay Packers.

Rodgers quickly fell to the ground after trying to get up after being tackled by Bills defensive end Leonard Floyd. “Before I had the MRI, I knew what had happened. “I knew I tore my Achilles,” Rodgers said. “I knew right away that this was not a good situation.”

The four-time NFL MVP is still bedridden after undergoing surgery on Tuesday. “I can’t put any weight on it yet,” said Rodgers, who called into McAfee’s show from his recovery room, still wearing his hospital bracelet.

Rodgers has teased that he intends to be back on the field by the start of the NFL playoffs in January, although that deadline is far earlier than the typical recovery period for an Achilles injury. “Anything is possible,” Rodgers said, before adding that “it doesn’t do anything on the fair front, other than it helps my own mental state.”

The indication that Rodgers hopes he can return to the field sooner than expected prompted a tease from The Pat McAfee Show panel, including Rodgers’ former Packers teammate AJ Hawk. “What are you trying to say? Trying to be the fastest guy to ever come back from an Achilles injury?” Hawk asked.

“We’ll see what happens,” Rodgers replied, before adding, “I think, like Kevin Garnett said, anything is possible.”

Rodgers said, “I’m going to try to push this thing as far as it will go.” “I have to see where I am in a week or two weeks, a month and two months from now, and then we’ll see what the conversation is like after that,” Rodgers said.
