Drew Barrymore Recalls Moment She Became ‘Totally Liberated’ After Overcoming the ‘Shame’ of Her Divorce

Drew Barrymore can talk about her past.

The talk show host spoke candidly about what she’s learned about divorce on Wednesday The Drew Barrymore Show broadcast.

Barrymore, 49, was married to Jeremy Thomas from 1994 to 1995 and to Tom Green from 2001 to 2002. She married Will Kopelman in 2012, and the two have two daughters together, Olive Barrymore Kopelman, 11, and Frankie Barrymore Kopelman (9). before the divorce in 2016.

Divorce became a topic of conversation following the discussion of Jennifer Lopez’s “Can’t Get Enough” music video, in which she “makes fun of being a four-time bride.”

“I had so much shame about the divorce and, for some reason, something happened, and I said, ‘I’m not willing to feel like this anymore.’ And it just lifted me up,” Barrymore said of her own divorce experience.

The TV personality said she sees divorce as a way to save “the precious commodity we have on this planet, which is just our time.”

“And when you’re really in a situation that doesn’t work the way it optimally hopes and wants to be, we accept it and improve the quality of life moving forward. Divorce now, for me, I don’t feel ashamed about it. It’s like I’m completely liberated, ” she continued.

“Jlo, I love you,” she said. “I really appreciate, again, [for] you bring empowerment where most people feel ashamed. We’ve all been in it. So go Jlo.”

In December 2022, Barrymore addressed her divorce from Kopelman, telling PEOPLE that “there was no scandal.”

“Nothing went wrong, which is cleaner, but it makes it difficult and confusing because there’s no point to point to. We worked really hard to make it work. [A friend] he told me: ‘Divorce is the death of a dream.’ That’s exactly what it feels like, something so final that you can’t take it back.”

She told PEOPLE that the experience made her vow to be a more present mother to their children.

“I know how that feels. If I didn’t learn from it, what was the point of ‘This is family, so nobody’s going anywhere.’ I was determined to make it work because we all loved each other so much,” Barrymore said.
