50 first dates could look a lot different.
As Drew Barrymore revealed earlier this week on her daytime talk show of the same name, her 2004 romantic comedy starring Adam Sandler didn’t just have an original title 50 first kissesbut it was also a “drama set in Seattle.”
But as fans know, the movie that was eventually realized was set in Hawaii and starred Barrymore, 49, as Lucy, a woman with permanent short-term memory loss who falls in love with a marine vet named Henry (Sandler, 57). and vice versa.
At the end 50 first datesHenry indulges in wooing Lucy every morning in a recorded video he makes to remind her of who he is and what they are to each other, after some time has passed and they welcomed a child together.
But “the original ending,” Barrymore said on her show, “was [Lucy telling Henry]’You should go and live your life, because this is no life here.’ ”

“AND [Henry] he leaves, as he does, and he comes back and walks into the restaurant and just sits down and says, ‘Hi, I’m Henry.’ And the movie ends,” she added.
Appearing stunned, Barrymore’s co-host Ross Mathews told her: “Honestly, can I just say: Thank you. Thank you for changing that.”
50 first dates marked the second film project for Sandler and Barrymore, who also dated in 1998. Wedding singer and in 2014 Mixed — and both have expressed an interest in working together again one day.
While discussing their on-screen chemistry in March 2023, Barrymore told PEOPLE that their relationship is “all based on like, love, admiration and humor.”
“I wanted a place to express my admiration, and I thought film was the safest and most cathartic place to do that,” she added of her working relationship with Sandler.

Barrymore explored the idea of a 50 first dates follow up on her show in December 2023, as she chats with Jason Momoa amid the release of his film Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.
After Momoa, 45, asked the actress if she had a favorite comedy she’s starred in, Barrymore said: “Well, I’ve been thinking 50 first dates,” before asking her guest, “If you were to do a romantic comedy … is there a rom-com you’d ever remake?”
“Yes, maybe 50 more dates“the Game of Thrones the alum replied, causing the host to drop his jaw sheepishly and ruffle his hair, and Momoa mimicked her.
Then he jokingly added, “You must go back to the islands and meet a Hawaiian.”
“I would do it. Of course you’re kidding?” Barrymore said.
