Although the contestants – who are chosen from the live studio audience – are the host’s “favourite part of the show”, Carey, 66, revealed he can tell some drink alcohol or use other recreational substances before they take to the stage.

“They will have [marijuana] rubber or I will smell alcohol on their breath. It’s not unusual,” he told TV Insider. “There was a guy here who tripped over mushrooms. He came with a bunch of friends.”

Carey revealed that it wasn’t until later that he realized the contestant was under the influence. The player was a “sketch [comedy] guy,” whom he later ran into at the United Citizens Brigade Comedy Theater.

“They were like, ‘Did you see that guy who claimed to be a rabbi riding a skateboard?'” he recalled. “I asked him what he did for a living. And he said, ‘I’m a rabbi who rides a skateboard.’ He didn’t think he would be chosen and he totally stumbled.”

While Carey may have experienced his fair share of wacky characters, he said he has the most fun with the contestants on the show.

“They are normal people living normal lives,” he explained. “There are no CEOs, ultra-rich upper management. They are not coming to their senses The price is right. They are the middle class, the working class. Every religion. It’s a cross-section of America.”

He continued: “Ordinary people are more interesting than celebrities. Honestly. Everyone had their own problems to overcome and their own demons to get their own special life. I learn more from them than anyone else.”

In 2007, Carey took over hosting of the beloved show from Bob Barker. He has since made the series his own with a new set, logo and theme music while cementing his place in game show history.

While speaking exclusively with PEOPLE at CBS’ fall schedule celebration on May 2, the longtime game show host revealed that he has no plans to step down from his position — in fact, Carey said he plans to play his role until his grave.

Thoughts of dying on stage with a microphone in hand were going through my head – he said with a laugh. “I never want to leave. I have such a good time there. Everyone treats me great, the cast is great and the production office is great.”

“I really feel supported, loved and wanted there,” Carey continues. “When you’re 65 and you’re in the entertainment business, that doesn’t really happen that often. I’m in a pretty rare situation, so I want to keep it going as long as I can.”
