A CAR was traveling the wrong way on a highway before a crash that killed two boys, a woman and two men, police said.

Cumbria Police today confirmed that officers received a report that the Skoda was “traveling southbound on the northbound carriageway” before the head-on collision.

When officers rushed to the scene, the same car involved in the head-on collision with the Toyota was involved.

The 42-year-old man driving the Toyota, as well as a 33-year-old woman and two boys aged 15 and seven, all from Glasgow, were pronounced dead at the scene.

A third child in the Toyota, also aged seven, was rushed to hospital and is still in serious condition.

The driver of the Skoda, a 40-year-old man from Cambridgeshire, also died from his injuries.

A Cumbria Police spokesman said: “Investigations are ongoing into a fatal collision on the M6 ​​northbound near Tebay Services.

“Police officers were called to the incident yesterday at 16:04 following a report of a Skoda traveling southbound on the northbound carriageway.

“The officers were on their way when additional calls were received, he was involved in a head-on collision with a Toyota.

“The driver of the Skoda, a 40-year-old man from Cambridgeshire, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Official identification of the victims has not yet been carried out, but their families are being assisted by specialized officers.

The police statement continued: “Officers would like to thank members of the public who assisted at the scene and those affected by the collision for their patience.

“We would also like to thank those who have already been in contact and who witnessed or have a dash cam of the incident, we continue to appeal to anyone with information or a dash cam to contact us.”
