Dua Lipa may not be single right now, but she’s learned a lot from spending time without a relationship.
In a new interview with Audacy’s Application podcast, the pop star opened up about how her new song “Houdini” was inspired by the “fun parts” of The Bachelor – presumably before she was first romantically linked to French director Romain Gavras in February 2023.
“You discover yourself, figure out what you like, what you don’t like, what you deserve, what works for you, not in certain cases,” Lipa, 28, said of how her past single status influenced the song, as well as “learning to read red flags and just say, ‘OK, this isn’t really for me,’ and then choose when to stay and when to ‘Houdini,’ basically, in all of those situations.”

“Houdini,” which was released last week, is an upbeat pop song that features lyrics that compare a breakup to magician Harry Houdini’s famous disappearing tricks. “I come and go / Tell me all the ways you need me / I’m not here long / Catch me or I go Houdini,” he sings on the song.
In the interview, Lipa opened up about what she took away from being single. “I think you can learn so much about yourself,” she said.
“I think a lot of people want to take their solitude to find someone else, but I think the whole point of spending that time alone is to really figure out what you need, and who you are in silence and who you are without someone,” the Grammy winner continued. “I think that’s the best part, and then of course just enjoying your girl time or whatever.”

After first being spotted leaving the BAFTA after-party in London together in February, Gavras and Lipa went public with their romance at the Cannes Film Festival on May 19, 2023, walking side by side on the red carpet.
The pair were last seen leaving the Chiltern Firehouse restaurant in London with Lipa’s younger brother Gjina earlier this month.
