In 1954, 16-year-old Durai Murugan joined the DMK party. Durai Murugan was first elected to the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly from Katpadi in 1971 and as MLA from Ranipet constituency in 1980. He won several elections, including the Kapadi Assembly election (1989), Tamil Nadu Kapadi election as MLA (2006). Later in 2006, he was appointed Minister for Public Works, Government of Tamil Nadu. In 2011, Durai Murugan contested from Katpadi constituency and defeated AIADMK’s Appu SRK. He was re-elected from Katpadi constituency in 2016. In 2021, Durai Murugan was elected as the provincial councilor for the Katpadi constituency for the sixth consecutive time. In 2021, he was also appointed as the water resources cabinet minister in Stalin-led DMK government.
