Dustin Hoffman's 6 Children: All About His Sons and Daughters

Dustin Hoffman is the proud father of six children: Karina, Jenna, Jake, Rebecca, Maxwell and Ali.

Dustin and his first wife, ballerina-turned-actress Anne Byrne, married in 1969 and are the parents of daughters Karina and Jenna. In 1978, the couple divorced and Dustin married entrepreneur and longtime friend Lisa Hoffman, née Gottsegen. Together they welcomed four children: Jake, Rebecca, Maxwell and Ali.

In an interview for The Washington Post In 1979, Dustin spoke about how he views parenthood and himself as a father.

“I know it’s a fantasy, but I wish I could be a parent who is like an ideal director. That is, someone who guides you without you even knowing it, without imposing himself,” he told the newspaper and added, “I know that I have certain characteristics that have been fairly constant over the years. For example, I always try my best in what I do.”

Dustin spoke with The Washington Post 1979 about how he was a dad and how his eldest liked to keep him informed about the latest trends.

“I love when Karina teaches me bump and grind, which is the latest dance,” he said at the time. “The first time it happened I was very shocked – and it’s not easy to shock me. I was embarrassed. It was a revelation.”

Karina was previously married to artist Simon Birkhead, whom she married in the early 90s. Karina was not in the center of attention, but lived a large part of her life away from the public eye.

Jenna Byrne, 53

Dustin and Byrne had a daughter, Jenna Byrne, on October 15, 1970. After their parents separated, Jenna and Karina grew up in NYC with Byrne, while Dustin juggled his career between Los Angeles and the Big Apple.

On the subject of fatherhood, Dustin spoke candidly about the effect of his separation from Anna on Jenna and Karina s The Washington Post.

“You are deluded if you think that separation does not have a traumatic effect on children,” he said in 1979. “They will feel that somehow they are expected to favor one parent over the other, and this causes conflict. It is important for them to know that they can love both, that they can talk to their dad about their mom in a positive sense and to their mom about their dad in a positive sense.”

Jenna had a busy acting career in the late 1990s. She made her debut in the 1995 thriller An outbreak of an epidemic and appeared in 1997 Wave the dog in the beloved comedy from 1998 Wedding singer. Jenna’s last role was in the 2001 film titled Love and support.

Jacob “Jake” Edward Hoffman, 43

Dustin married his second wife, Lisa, in 1980. On March 20, 1981, they welcomed their first child together, Jacob “Jake” Edward Hoffman, in LA While pregnant with Jake, Lisa underwent an emergency C-section because Jake’s lungs were not fully developed.

People look and see that I’m there with my dad. It was embarrassing.”

Rebecca Lillian Hoffman, 41

In March 1983, Dustin and Lisa had their second child, a daughter named Rebecca Lillian Hoffman.

While Rebecca appeared in the 1991 film Hook and a TV movie Nozze di Figaro in 1996, according to IMDB, she hasn’t appeared on screen since and seems to prefer to keep a low profile, not appearing to have a public online presence.

Maxwell Geoffrey Hoffman, 40

The couple’s second son, Maxwell Geoffrey Hoffman, was born in LA on August 30, 1984. Much of his professional career has been a family affair, from starring alongside his sister Rebecca in Hook (1991) to work with his father Meet the Fockers (2004). Maxwell even appeared in the Asthmahis older brother’s directorial debut, 2014.

Despite growing up with an acclaimed actor for a father, Maxwell and his siblings didn’t spend their childhood watching Dustin on screen.

“There were no posters on the wall,” Dustin told TIME magazine in October 2017. “Growing up, I was made fun of because I’d say, ‘Let me put this up, you’re going to love it.’ They would say, ‘Is it black and white or color?’ I would say, ‘Black and white’. Not! ‘Is it a documentary about bugs?’ I’d say, ‘Yeah, but you’ll love it!’ ”

He added: “They taught me not to listen. But I don’t have a child who has seen everything I’ve done. I don’t want to bother them like that.”

Alexandra Lydia Hoffman, 36

Alexandra “Ali” Lydia Hoffman was born on October 27, 1987 and is the youngest member of the Hoffman clan. She recorded a small episodic role in her father’s film Mile of the moon (2002).

Ali dated actor Jonah Hill in the early 2010s, and Hill’s first family vacation Hoffman even inspired a James Franco romantic comedy Why Him?.

“Jonah was talking to Ben Stiller on the set once, and he said, ‘Oh man, I’m going on vacation with Dustin Hoffman. Like, I don’t know him.’ And it was very early in his relationship,” Franco told Dustin during their “Actors About Actors” interview. Diversity in 2017.

Dustin remembered the vacation, but also noted that he shouldn’t talk about family matters. “I shouldn’t bring my family. Everyone is making me promise,” he joked.

Franco was quick to add that Hill was “really nervous about it” and worried about “making a bad impression” on the Hoffman family. “The producer, Shawn Levy, overheard it.
