Dusty Rhodes was born on October 11, 1945. His name is Virgil Riley Runnels Jr. He was born in a poor neighborhood of Austin, Texas, USA, as the son of a plumber. He went to Johnston High School and graduated there. After graduation, Dusty went on to play baseball and football at West Texas State (now known as West Texas A&M University).

After his professional career, this individual tried out for the Boston Patriots of the American Football League, but was cut. He then played in the Continental Soccer League for the Hartford Charter Oaks until the team disbanded. Dusty had a brother named Larry and a sister named Connie.
