Dutch TV perfectly show optical illusion that could clear up debate over controversial Newcastle winner vs Arsenal

DUTCH TELEVISION has shown an optical illusion that could potentially clear up the debate surrounding Newcastle’s controversial winner against Arsenal.

The Gunners and boss Mikel Arteta were left fuming after being on the receiving end of several highly contested decisions during their 1-0 defeat to the Magpies on Saturday.

Spain’s Arteta has made it clear he believes Anthony Gordon’s goal should not have stood after questions were raised about the ball going out of play in the build-up to the goal.

Replays were assessed at Stockley Park as VAR officials checked whether the ball had gone out before Joe Willock regained possession.

It appeared to cross the touchline before being carried back into the north Londoners’ penalty area.

VAR ultimately concluded that there was no clear angle to show whether the ball went out of bounds before Willock’s cross.

It was a potential offside and a foul on Gabriel Magalhaes by Joelinton.

That goal was eventually awarded after a five-minute review with Arteta afterwards describing VAR as an “absolute disgrace” while claiming he was “ashamed” of the standard of refereeing in the Premier League.

His club then issued a defiant statement backing his brutal attack yesterday, while calling on the referees to improve their game.

However, shocking new footage has emerged which shows the ball did stay ON the pitch before Newcastle’s winner settled one row.

Footage of the goal from beIN SPORTS appears to agree with the officials and shows that a tiny sliver of the ball was still on the line and was correctly deemed to be in play before Newcastle hit the post.

Now Dutch TV has shown the above optical illusion that shows the ball is out of play with the naked eye.

However, on closer inspection this supports the beIN SPORTS evidence and shows that a small proportion of football has still not crossed the line.

A similar incident happened at the World Cup in December in Japan’s victory over Spain, which eliminated Germany.

Die Mannschaft fans were left furious after a controversial call forced them to pack up after Ao Tanaka completed a remarkable comeback.

The cross that led to his goal looked from some angles to have crossed the line, although technology proved it remained in play just millimeters before Kaoru Mitoma pulled it back for his team-mate to cross.

Images appeared to show the ball was over – but Fifa released footage of the goal to show the ball was a millimeter short.

Arsenal’s explosive statement yesterday read: “Arsenal Football Club wholeheartedly endorses Mikel Arteta’s post-match comments following even more unacceptable refereeing and VAR errors on Saturday night.

“We would also like to acknowledge the great effort and performance of our players and traveling supporters at St James’ Park.

“The Premier League is the best league in the world with the best players, coaches and fans, all of whom deserve better.

“PGMOL urgently needs to address the standard of judging and focus on action that moves us all away from retrospective analysis, attempts at explanations and excuses.

“We support the continued efforts of head referee Howard Webb and would welcome working together to achieve the world-class officiating standards our league demands.”
