TV presenter Eamonn (64) lived through two years of hell, lost his mother, job, health, home, and now his wife.

Friends say he went through ordeals that “would have broken most people” but he “carried on and continued to do the best he could.”

Eamonn’s desire to return to his native Belfast also left them at odds, as he spent more and more time away from their £3.6m home in Surrey.

Ruth, who has son Jack, 21, with Eamonn, appears to have started preparing for the split last year.

Paperwork from her TV company, Hey Ho Ltd, revealed she paid herself a dividend of £2.2m last year, compared with the £85,000 she claimed the year before.

A source said: “Eamonn and Ruth’s relationship changed when they left This Morning. They went in different career directions and their priorities started to change.

“Eamonn was desperate to return to Belfast, which he considers his home, but Ruth never wanted to move. It became a bone of contention.

“As her ITV career continued, Eamonn took a different path and they became ships in the night.

“For the past two years, they have led separate lives, professionally and personally.”

Our source continued: “Ruth was incredibly caring and even though they were apart for a long time, she still helped nurse him through his health battles.

“At the end of the day, she still cares a lot about him. She just knows they can’t be together.”

Yesterday, The Sun on Sunday revealed the couple had ended their 14-year marriage.

Eamonn did not live in their home for several weeks after Ruth, friends said, admitted she wanted out.

Friends said Ruth wanted to announce the split – while Eamonn was burying his head in the sand.

They added: “Eamonn never seemed to believe it was over.

“Even until the publication of the statement, he was in denial. It was as if he never believed that Ruth would take the steps to move on.

“But Ruth had had enough and time was up. He wants to be able to move on with his life.”

Eamonn spoke of Ruth’s irritation at his desire to return to Belfast.

Last year, when asked where he thought of as home, he said: “Well, it’s not Surrey.

“When people ask me what I do on weekends, I tell them I go home.

“Then my wife is very irritated by it. She says, ‘This is your home.’

“And I say, ‘No Ruth, I work here. I have to be here, but at home…'”

Ruth is taking a break from her job as presenter of Loose Women and will not be on screen this week.

Eamonn is due to return to GB News tomorrow, but pals say he is “not sure if he will talk about their split on air”.

They said: “It’s been a hellish couple of years for him with his health. On top of that, he was axed by ITV, suffered a fall that left him with a life-changing injury that means he struggles to walk, and his mother, whom he adored, died.

“To make matters worse, he was hit with a huge tax bill which forced him to sell his home in Northern Ireland.

“It would have been enough to break most people, but Eamonn kept going and kept working.

“It obviously took a toll in many areas of his life, including, ultimately, his marriage.”

Eamonn’s mother Josie died in November 2022 aged 93.

He said she was “sharp as a wire” and “beautiful” and said: “We loved her and will miss her very much.”

In January this year, he revealed his devastation after having to sell his Belfast home due to a long-running dispute with the taxman.

He said of the loss, “It’s like everything I’ve ever worked for has been taken away from me.”

The star was very critical of ITV after his departure.

He said he was fired “without warning” and added: “They weren’t polite when they kicked me out the door and didn’t care where I was going.”

He began suffering chronic pain in 2021 from a trapped sciatic nerve and told The Sun: “I can’t bend over to pick things up.”

In September 2022, he had spinal surgery and was forced to retire from work at GB News.

Two months later, he broke his shoulder in a freak accident, which left him struggling with mobility.

He said, “I can’t run, I can’t walk, I can’t do anything but watch TV and eat.”

A CUP RAISES THE SPIRIT

EAMONN Holmes cheered the news of his marriage break-up – as his beloved Manchester United triumphed in the FA Cup.

The loyal fan endured an emotional 24 hours as the split became public as the Red Devils defeated Premier League champions Manchester City 2-1 at Wembley Stadium.

The victory in the final came thanks to the goals of Alejandro Garnach and Kobbie Mainoo.

After the game, a delighted Eamonn posted a picture online of himself alongside his friend and former United manager Sir Alex Ferguson as he paid tribute to Erik ten Hag’s players.

He wrote on the Internet: “My God, what a cup final, what a result! European football next season as well.

“The magic of the cup. Congratulations to the whole team.”
