Did you know that you can recover deleted text messages on some Android phones without using a third-party app? As long as you use Google Messages or the default Samsung Galaxy Messages app, recovering deleted text messages is easy. This wikiHow teaches you how to recover deleted messages on any Android and offers tips to avoid losing messages in the future.

  • If you have a Samsung Galaxy and use the default messaging app, you can easily recover deleted texts.
  • Tap the three-dot menu, tap “Trash,” and long-tap your message to restore it.
  • You can restore archived texts using a similar method for the Messages by Google application.

    Open Messages. It is the default messaging app on your Samsung Galaxy phone.

  2. Touch . This three-dot menu icon is located near the top-right corner of your screen and will open a menu.

  3. Touch Waste or Recycle bin. You will see both words depending on your region.

    • A list of all text threads you have deleted and individually deleted messages will appear here.
  4. Long tap the message you want to restore. If you touch it too quickly, you will see the message in a new window.

    • After you long tap on the message, you will see that it is highlighted which means it is selected. You can tap multiple messages to retrieve them as well.
  5. Tap the Restore icon. It looks like a curved arrow pointing counterclockwise and is located in the lower left corner of your screen.

    Open Messages. It’s Google’s messaging app, so it’s usually the default on many non-Samsung Androids, including the Pixel.

    • This method only recovers archived messages. Deleted messages are gone forever.
  2. Tap the menu icon ( or ). Depending on your device, you will see a menu icon with three dots or three lines in the upper left or upper right corner of the screen.

  3. Touch Archived. You’ll see this near the middle of the menu.

    • All your deleted text messages will appear.
  4. Press and hold to select your message. The message will open in a new window if you simply tap on it. Go back to the list view and long tap on it.

  5. Tap the Restore icon. It looks like a map with an arrow pointing up.[1]

    • The message will reappear in your chat!
