In 1988, Edward E. Graf Jr. was found guilty of capital murder and given a life sentence. Graf was allowed a retrial after serving 26 years in prison, and after accepting a plea agreement in October, he was given a 60-year term.
Graf, 62, was given good time credit for his sentence and released seven days after confessing to the crime, moving into an El Paso halfway home.
Clare Bradburn, Graf’s ex-wife and mother of the two sons, Jason, 8, and Joby, 9, stated, “I pray for the safety and welfare of residents in any community where Ed Graf will live and work.”
Graf was charged by the prosecution with putting the two boys in a shed behind his former Hewitt residence before lighting it on fire to get the insurance money.
Graf was given a second trial after the State Fire Marshal’s Office determined that two investigators who testified against him in 1988 were mistaken when they said the fire was started on purpose based on photographs and other evidence. Until he admitted to the crime as part of his plea agreement, Graf maintained his innocence.
According to what I understand, halfway houses serve as short-term residences with the intention of reintegrating convicts into society. “How can a man who has been viciously burning my small sons alive for four months be rehabilitated? He is a twice-convicted, double-child killer who lied for 26 years before finally confessing. There will never be a recovery for Ed Graf.
Graf is required to look for work and maintain a daily schedule as part of the Super-Intensive Supervision Programme. Graf’s ankle monitor will alert a parole officer if he deviates from that routine. The supervision of Graf will last until April 29, 2048.
Walter M. Reaves Jr., one of Graf’s solicitors, worries that his client would not be able to obtain employment. Reaves stated, “He’s 62 years old with a college degree, yet he spent the last 26 years in prison. “I’m not sure. He can perform a lot of things, without a doubt. Another concern is whether he will get the chance to do that. But I am relieved that he is now free. I wish him success in his search for employment.
