Soccer brings Ed Sheeran and Elton John together this holiday season.

In sweet video on social networks published on Wednesday, the two pop superstars attended a football match between Ipswich Town and Watford, exchanged ugly sweaters as Christmas presents and even sang.

After the initial release of “Merry Christmas,” Sheeran recounted how John convinced him to collaborate on a holiday song during an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.

“I’ve always been pretty against… not that I don’t like Christmas, I love Christmas. But in terms of doing a Christmas song, you have to throw the kitchen sink at it,” Sheeran said.

He continued with a laugh: “I have a friend from Northern Ireland who says, ‘If you’re going to be done for stealing a horse, you might as well… that, you know?’

John is no stranger to holiday music, having released his own 1973 hit, “Step Into Christmas,” the success of which Sheeran parlayed with the partially inspired “Merry Christmas.”

“I think he came in at 13 in the ’80s, and he was like No. 6 last year in England, so he said, ‘I want to sing another Christmas song, do you want one with me?'” Fallon said. “[John] he called me on Christmas Day… ’cause he was so thrilled that ‘Step Into Christmas’ was getting higher in the charts every year.”

Of course, given Sheeran’s previous stance against Christmas music, he told John that if he took on the project, he wanted to give it his all: “I told Elton, I said, ‘I don’t want to sing a Christmas song unless we go in. “Get this. So we’re writing it, and I title it ‘Merry Christmas,’ and I’m like, ‘We’re going to have to change that title,’ because there’s probably a bunch of songs called ‘Merry Christmas,'” Sheeran said.

“I went on Spotify and typed in ‘Merry Christmas,’ nothing. There’s ‘Merry Christmas, Everyone,’ there’s ‘Merry Christmas,’ there’s ‘Merry Christmas,’ there’s ‘The War Is Over,’ [but] there is no song called ‘Merry Christmas’.”
