Ed Sheeran Reacts to First-Ever Emmy for Song in ‘Ted Lasso’ Finale: ‘I Was Not Expecting to Win at All’

Ed Sheeran is definitely “happier” now.

On Tuesday, the “Shape of You” musician, 32, reacted to his first win at the 2023 Creative Emmy Awards the night before. Sheeran took home an Emmy for Outstanding Original Score and Lyrics for “A Beautiful Game,” which featured in the Season 3 finale Ted Lasso.

“Last night we won an Emmy. I didn’t expect to win at all, it was a real surprise to wake up to the news, I wish I could have been there, but I just started a tour in Asia so unfortunately I had to be elsewhere,” Sheeran wrote on Instagram with a video recording of his collaboration in the studio on the song with co-writers Foy Vance and Max Martin.

He continued: “I wrote a song for Ted Lasso with Max Martin and @foyvance called ‘A Beautiful Game’. We were all fans of the show and were asked to sing a song for the finale, so 2 years ago this month we got together and wrote a song about love and football, and how it’s always about the journey, not the destination. ”

Sheeran noted that he filmed the audience at one of his concerts “singing the last song to stay in the photo [v]ibes.”

The “perfect” performer acknowledged his “fantastic” competition in the category, which includes Ginny & Georgia, The L Word: Generation Q, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Ted Lasso — nominated twiceand Weird: The Al Yankovic Story.

Although Sheeran admitted he didn’t think they “had a chance to win”, he was grateful for the win.

“Many thanks to whoever voted for it, and to Max, Foy and the whole Lasso crew. I’m really honored. The song is everywhere on all platforms if you haven’t heard it yet. I love you all! And Happy New Year, see you on the road x” , he concluded.

Sheeran released “A Beautiful Game” in May and announced the single just a day before the finale aired, although he had been working on it for a long time.

“I recorded parts of it while I was on tour with crowds from the stadiums I played at and I’m super, super, super proud of it,” Sheeran said in an Instagram video. “I love the show. I loved working on this song. I hope you enjoy it – just a little fun. Football!”

Ted Lasso premiered in August 2020 and aired for three seasons. Since the premiere, Jason Sudeikis — who plays Ted Lasso himself — has won 11 Emmy Awards for the role.
