Edward James Olmos Is 'Grateful' His Health Is ‘All Good’ After Going into Remission from Cancer (Exclusive)

Edward James Olmos’ health is on the upswing after completing treatment for throat cancer nearly two years ago.

The 77-year-old actor shared in an interview with PEOPLE at the film’s premiere One quick move at The Culver Theater in Los Angeles on August 6, that he “personally” hasn’t gotten too close with the other actors on set due to his recovery.

When asked about his health, Olmos replied that “everything is fine,” adding, “I had a test two days ago and the doctor said, ‘Congratulations, you’re doing very, very well.’ I’m very grateful, but it was very difficult.”

He shared that he “finished” all cancer treatment in December 2022, and doctors told him it would take “about two years” to really know “whether” the treatment was successful or not.

“Right now I’m a year and about six months, seven months [into it],” he said. “Yesterday was a very important day when they did the test, the PET scan,” which is an imaging test that shows the function of your tissues and organs, according to the Mayo Clinic.

The Selena the actor said that now that his health is in a better place, he is focused on his loved ones.

“I’m just looking forward to spending more time with my family,” Olmos said. “I did it anyway, but that happens in the end. You end up having time for your family, you understand your life well.”

Olmos previously shared an interview in May published by The Daily mail that his body had a hard time adjusting to cancer treatment and that there were “many, many times throughout the process” of his cancer treatment when the thought of giving up “entered my head.”

“Once they stopped all the chemo and all the radiation and treatments, the body gave up, and that’s when it really got tough,” he shared. “But after that, in the 90 days, 100 days after that, I was in much better shape and today I feel very strong.”

Olmos said he has since adjusted his lifestyle, taking into account the way he eats, exercises and sleeps, as well as other “basic basics.” He added: “That’s the key to your life — you are what you eat and you are what you do. So if you don’t do anything, you won’t be here for long.”

In his new film One quick move, Olmos plays Abel, the owner of a motorcycle shop in which the main character Wes also plays Riverdale alum KJ Apa, works. The film follows Wes, a young man who follows his dreams of motorcycle racing with the help of his small-town community despite being plagued by the absence of his estranged father.

Apart from Olmos and Apa, One quick move stars Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin track star Maia Reficco, Grey’s Anatomy long-term Eric Dane and Foreign banks actor Austin North. The film was written and directed by Kelly Blatz, who previously acted Prom and Older love triangle.

One quick move will be released on Prime Video on August 8.
