After pleading guilty last week, one of the three men accused of killing Egypt Covington is now qualified to testify in the prosecution. According to Covington’s brother, D’Wayne Turner, “this sets the stage for the prosecution of the other two more violent suspects.”
In connection with the 2017 shooting death of Covington in his Van Buren Township duplex, Shane Lamar Evans pleaded guilty to second-degree murder. As a result, the charges of aggravated manslaughter and first degree trespassing were dismissed. When Evans is sentenced on May 4, he could face 15 to 25 years in prison.
Lindsay Turner stated, “He’s going to testify against his cousin and his brother.” Lindsay is referring to the men accused of killing Covington, Timothy Eugene Moore and Shandon Ray Groom. A trial will take place later this year.
According to Evans’ testimony, the men intended to break into the adjacent side of the Covington duplex to obtain marijuana. Evans claimed that before leaving he indicated which door to enter. It wasn’t until the next day that he discovered that Moore and Groom had been on the wrong side. That will happen sooner, according to D’Wayne, and we look forward to seeing these two men behind bars.
According to D’Wayne and Lindsay, the visitor from justice brought many lessons to anyone who might find themselves in a similar situation, waiting for justice. “There is no time frame or guideline for that. We can advise them to be patient as the legal process would take some time,” D’Wayne said. Covington was murdered in 2017, but her attackers were not caught until Michigan State Police took over the investigation.
“Our family, like everyone who knew and loved Egypt, is going through an extremely difficult time. We are encouraged by the efforts of the Wayne County Prosecutor this week and the way the case appears to be moving forward. We are optimistic that that things will move rapidly toward a just conclusion.”
