Biography of Elizabeth Vargas
Elizabeth Vargas was born on September 6, 1962 in Preston, New Jersey. Her father, Rafael Vargas, is a colonel in the United States Army, and her mother, Anne Vargas, is a homemaker. She spent her childhood moving from job to job in Germany and Belgium. Elizabeth later earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism from the University of Missouri in Columbia. She made her debut as a reporter/anchor for NBC affiliate KOMU-TV.
She later worked at KTVN in Reno after graduating from college. She then moved to Phoenix, working as an anchor reporter for KTVK-TV.

Career
She soon began working at CBS-owned WBBM-TV in Chicago. In 1993, she left CBS after four years to join NBC News. She later became a news anchor for ABC’s Good Morning America. Because of her dedication, she was quickly promoted to correspondent for the primetime show, where she was succeeded by Kevin Newman as newsreader.
She was one of the many hosts of 20/20 Downtown in 2002, and the series was later renamed Downtown. The show was later renamed to its original name. She became host of the popular World News Tonight Sunday in November 2003, and in 2004 was named co-host of 20/20.
She left World News Tonight in 2006, and was replaced by Gibson, who was named the show’s sole anchor. According to Vargas, the main reason for this was her doctors’ advice to reduce her schedule and spend more time with her new baby.
She later returned to 20/20 as co-anchor and anchor of the ABC News special. “Elvis: Viva Las Vegas,” a special TC event, was hosted by her.
