Ellie Kemper Remembers When Jon Hamm Was Her High School Drama Teacher: A ‘Class Act’

Ellie Kemper reflects on her high school years — and her relationship with Jon Hamm!

Future Crazy people the actor was Kemper’s high school drama teacher, and she said he even supported her early career efforts as she became a viral TV star.

“Jon Hamm is a generous, selfless guy,” Kemper, 43, said on an episode of Andy Cohen Andy Cohen live on Sirius XM. “I came to him when I was doing my solo. A little comedy series. I had my little suitcase of props. I was doing that one-person solo in Los Angeles, and he was already famous at the time Crazy people.”

Kemper continued, “I emailed him from our high school directory. I said, ‘Hey, I’m doing this show. I know you’re really busy, but it would be great if you could come.’ And he came, and that’s when I really reconnected with him.”

From the kindness shown by Hamm, 52, Office alum added: “I mean, it’s classic acting, right? He’s a good guy.”

Cohen then asked Kemper if she even had a crush on the actor, especially when she was in high school. “Here’s the thing,” Kemper began. “So he’s 10 years older than me. He went to my high school. To give people a little background, he went to my high school, went to college, came back and taught drama at our high school for a year. And he is by far the youngest teacher. He doesn’t look bad, and he teaches drama.”

Cohen then interjected with a correction, saying, “Sorry, he is Great watching.”

Kemper had to agree. “He looks great, actually,” she said, even using the word “dreamy.”

Hamm also talked about his time teaching Kemper while talking to Entertainment Weekly In 2013, “You were in ninth grade, and this is a class that had everyone from ninth grade to senior — so you were on the young end of the spectrum,” Hamm told Kepmer at the time. “And yet, I remember you being very good.”

Hamm and Kemper later got the chance to share the screen together. The Child driver star appeared in Kemper’s hit Netflix comedy Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, where he played Gary Wayne’s Reverend Richard Wayne. “When we were told he was going to play a reverend, it was fantastic. But I was a little scared,” Kemper said during a 2015 appearance at a Television Critics Association panel.

“I think there’s still a teacher-student dynamic, and acting with him was a little nerve-wracking just because I felt like he was still judging me on some level,” she added. – But he is a wonderful man and it was a lot of fun.
