Emily Ann Roberts was in the middle of Blake Shelton’s tour earlier this year when she received news that scared the hell out of her.
“Basically, the doctor told me, ‘If you sing tonight and you bleed, you’re going to be out for six months,'” Roberts, 25, recalled during a recent interview with PEOPLE. “And I said, ‘Well, that’s not an option.'”
Indeed, there was no way Vote prominent would ever jeopardize her already successful 2024 just so she could sing through a bout of laryngitis. And now as he continues to tour with Jamey Johnson, Roberts says he’s making some changes.
“I do my warm-up and I try to drink a lot of water because it helps a lot,” explains Roberts, who will reunite with Shelton in Minnesota on August 25. “And then, I try to keep my mouth shut!” She laughs. “I try not to talk all the time. People think that singing exhausts the voice, but actually, talking is much harder on your vocal cords.”
Today, Roberts says he is “fully back” to himself.
“I’m doing everything I can to stay healthy and watch for warning signs because, man, I learned a lot going through it,” she notes. “If he ever rears his head again, I’ll know what to do to fight him and not let him get that bad.”

That’s certainly good news, as Roberts says he’s currently “writing and working” on his next project. “I’m kind of going back to writing songs that I love and sharing things that I love, not for any other reason than, ‘Hey, this was on my heart and I want to share it with you,'” she says. “It doesn’t have to be a fancy thing. I’m just sharing some of the things that are coming out of me right now.”
Roberts was also able to take some time to enjoy the release of a deluxe version of her career-changing debut album earlier this year I can’t hide the countrywhich features three brand new songs, including the ultra-vulnerable “When I’m Gone.”
“I just went to my father’s cousin’s funeral,” Roberts says of the poignant song she co-wrote with Autumn McEntire, whose aunt is Reba McEntire. “He died unexpectedly. And I just remember sitting in that service and his daughter and his son and his wife and his friends and family all stood up and talked about his life. And I thought, you know what? They didn’t say a word about his job or how many awards he had or how much money he made. They didn’t talk about any of that.”
In fact, Roberts calls it his own wake-up call.
“I love my job and even though my career is such an important part of my life, it shouldn’t be my whole life,” she says quietly. “We won’t be here forever, so we should start living for the things that matter most.”
Like enjoying her new kitchen.
“It’s a Barbie dollhouse kitchen, and it’s green and pink and so cute,” notes Roberts, who bought her first home with husband Chris Sasser more than a year ago. “I’ve always wanted to remodel the kitchen, but it’s a big project. But when I left for the last half of the Shelton tour, Chris texted me after I left and said he was going to try to get this kitchen completely finished by the time I got back.”

Little did she know that her high school husband would become an even bigger YouTube and TikTok star, as he shared the entire remodeling journey on their “Sasser House” social media.
“He was very good,” the Tennessee native admits with a laugh. “It was so thoughtful. He told me he was looking at my Pinterest, seeing different things I saved for inspiration. I mean, that’s genius.”
Another inspiration for Roberts has always been her fellow country music star Dolly Parton, who everyone seems to compare her to.
“It’s surreal and strange because I look up to her so much,” he concludes. “Nobody’s gonna replace Dolly’s shoes, Dolly’s bra, Dolly’s personality. Nobody can do that but Dolly!” She laughs. “So in a way, it’s a huge compliment. I look up to her so much, but if anybody’s going to compare me to anybody, it’s lucky to be compared to her.”
