Emily Blunt Says She Was Asked to Wear Something ‘More Stylish’ for Devil Wears Prada Audition

Emily Blunt questioned her personal style choices during an audition for The devil wears Prada.

The 40-year-old admitted in An evening with… Emily Blunt held at the Los Angeles Film Academy Museum on Thursday night to moderator Rob Marshall that no one knew who she was at the time.

She was at 20th Century Fox (now called 20th Century Studios) auditioning for another movie role when someone asked her if she would audition for a movie. Blunt recalled that the person described the role as “just this little thing with Meryl Streep.”

She said she missed her flight and felt “frantic and chaotic” while reading for the role of Miranda Priestley’s (Meryl Streep), also called Emily, first assistant in the 2006 hit film.

Blunt almost missed her flight and soon got a call back from the film’s director, David Frankel, who asked her to come in for another audition.

“He said, ‘Look, I’d give you the part, but the studio was wondering if you could wear something dressier,'” Blunt recalled. “To be honest, I was wearing a hoodie and jeans when I auditioned.”

In the film, Blunt’s character Emily Charlton is often running around under stress as she tries to fulfill Miranda’s demands and keep Andy Sachs (Anne Hathaway), a new hire and Miranda’s second assistant, in line. Blunt said she thought her hectic vibe as she worried about catching her flight might have worked in her favor — but her outfit certainly didn’t.

The star then tried to amp up her wardrobe for her second audition in London. She didn’t specifically describe the outfit she pulled out of her closet for the occasion, but noted, “I thought it looked pretty chic. I don’t know, it was probably awful.”

“I mean, the experience was, it was heaven, that movie was heaven,” Blunt said of her time filming with Streep and Hathaway. “We had a party. It was simple, you could say it was extremely fun.”

Regardless of what Emily’s character was wearing, Blunt said she made an artistic choice to look desperate rather than “stern” and “ascetic”.

“I think that desperation is funnier… Well, that was the time of my life,” the actress mused.
