Emily Blunt Says Tom Cruise Was ‘Such a Doll to Me’ on Edge of Tomorrow Set: ‘I Loved Him’

Emily Blunt sings the praises of Tom Cruise.

On Thursday, Blunt, 40, appeared at the Los Angeles Film Academy Museum for a moderated conversation with director Rob Marshall, with whom Blunt worked on the 2014 film. Into the forest and in 2018 Mary Poppins is back.

At one point during the wide-ranging conversation, Marshall drew Blunt’s attention to the time she spent with Cruise, 61, on Edge of tomorrow. The two starred in the 2014 sci-fi action film as a pair of soldiers involved in a war between humanity and an alien race in the near future who discover that Cruise’s character has gained the ability to relive moments in time.

While Blunt talked about getting in shape for the physically intense role, she noted that action icon Cruise helps “tighten everyone’s screws when it comes to what you think you’re capable of.”

“And because he can do anything and wants to do anything, it makes you want to meet him where he’s at,” she shared, adding, “He’s so inspiring. He’s my doll.”

“He’s so gracious. So sweet. Oh, so sweet. I loved him. Yes. He was amazing,” Blunt continued. She also praised Cruise for making sure she was involved in a large part of the film’s production.

“We were writing the third act as we went along,” she said. “And then again, sometimes the best movies are born out of that chaos. And I think I thought it would be kind of a boys’ club and [Cruise] he brought me to every script meeting, every decision.”

Blunt has said in recent months that she is interested in revisiting the project for a sequel.

“It was [a sequel script] that [filmmaker Doug Liman] it kind of slipped my mind,” she said in the August episode Happy Sad Confused podcast. “I mean, I’d like to make it a reality, but I just don’t know when or how. And how Mission: Impossible works [Cruise] need?

“Wasn’t he brilliant as the cowardly hero? Oh, amazing. I couldn’t stand it, I adored him,” she added of Cruise at the time. “He was the best. I’m so ready [for a sequel.] I’m not an obstacle, I promise.”

Although there are no known plans to make it Edge of tomorrow sequel, Cruise and director Liman intend to make a film together in which Cruise would shoot scenes on the International Space Station in space. Cruise shared a brief update on the film in July, saying Diversity that he and Liman “worked diligently on it.”

“We’ll see where we go,” he said then.
