Emily Maitlis News

Emily Maitlis, a former host of Newsnight, declared that the BBC’s criticism of her for making comments about Dominic Cummings on-air “makes no sense” and expressed concern that mounting political pressure had caused the media to self-censor.

The BBC said Maitlis violated its impartiality rules in 2020 when she claimed “the country can see” the prime minister’s advisor at the time had broken lockdown regulations.

Maitlis, who has since left the BBC, claimed that the decision was made “without any kind of due process” and that it may have served as “a message of reassurance” to the administration.

An official from the BBC responded, saying, “The BBC places the highest priority on proper impartiality and accuracy and we apply these standards to our reporting on all matters.

“As we have previously stated in connection to Newsnight, any suggestion that we took action under pressure from the government or Number 10 is false. The BBC determined that the programme violated its editorial standards, and that determination is still valid.

“Why had the BBC immediately and publicly sought to confirm the government spokesman’s opinion, without any kind of due process?” Maitlis questioned in a lecture at the Edinburgh Television Festival.

It doesn’t make sense for an outfit that is laudably known for its strict adherence to protocol. Unless it was possibly delivering a message of assurance to the government itself?

She continued, “Put this in the context of the BBC board, where another active agent of the Conservative party – former Downing Street spin doctor and former adviser to BBC rival GB News – now sits, acting as the arbiter of BBC impartiality.”

Theresa May’s former head of communications Sir Robbie Gibb is likely the person she was alluding to.

She further disclosed that Mr. Cummings had personally contacted her to offer his support throughout the commotion at the time.

The adviser had not infringed the rules, according to statements made at the time by both Mr. Cummings and the prime minister.

Speaking on Wednesday during the festival’s keynote speech, Maitlis claimed that the media had failed to respond to attacks from populist parties and ran the risk of losing the trust of viewers.

The No. 10 adviser’s controversial trip to Barnard Castle was the subject of a Newsnight episode that Maitlis introduced in May 2020 by saying: “Dominic Cummings broke the rules – the country can see that and it’s shocked the government cannot.”

She said in her address that “a phone call of complaint was made from Downing Street to the BBC News management” the next morning. The BBC quickly determined that the monologue had violated standards on “due impartiality,” according to what she said.
