One of Australia’s most renowned artists, John Olsen, who was most known for his landscape paintings, passed away at the age of 95.
Olsen passed away on Tuesday night in his home close to Bowral, New South Wales, surrounded by his family. Olsen received the Archibald prize in 2005 for a self-portrait and was inducted into the Order of Australia in 2001.
According to Louise and Tim Olsen, who are Olsen’s children, “Our father was a titan of the art world and beloved by many in Australia and abroad, but to us he was dad, in all the wonderful humaneness, complexity, and humanity that word encapsulates.” Our father spent his entire life painting, and he continued to do so until the very end.
The two claimed that their father had been anticipating seeing his artwork displayed on the Opera House sails for Vivid Sydney next month; the family had planned to reserve a harbourfront hotel for the opening night.
Olsen informed his children just a few weeks ago, “I can watch my work on the Opera House sails in my own private light show in a beautiful hotel room with my family all around me before going to bed and quietly drifting off forever,” according to the statement. What better method is there to part ways?
Olsen was honoured on Twitter by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, who called him “a giant who never lost the twinkle in his eye.” He was “a man of talent, charisma, generosity and humility, a poet of the bush, a truly great explorer and interpreter of the Australian landscape.”
Olsen, who was born in Newcastle in January 1928, attended school in Sydney and studied art at the Julian Ashton, the Datillo Rubbo, and the East Sydney Technical College before first becoming well-known for the pieces he created while spending three years abroad in Europe.
With his “You beaut country” series and what would become a lifetime fascination in portraying the landscape and Australian identity, he solidified his status as one of the country’s top artists upon his return.
His landscape paintings frequently featured repeating subjects like Sydney Harbour and Lake Eyre, but probably his most well-known piece is a mural called Salute to Five Bells that is displayed in the Sydney Opera House.
Olsen asserted last year that “to be an Australian landscape painter is to be an explorer.” The Australian landscape, with its variety from tropical to coastal fringe to interior, offers a lot to gaze at and observe.
