“Clarity, I got my clarity from studying Eminem when I was a kid. How I got into the studio was just curiosity. I loved music, but it was curiosity,” Lamar said GQ 2016. “The day I heard LP Marshall Mathers, I asked myself, ‘How does that work? What is he doing? How does he compose his words like that? What’s the song under that? Ad-lib? What is it?”‘
He continued, “And then, ‘Why don’t you go to the studio and see? Well, I’m doing it. Then it became, How do his words break through the beat like that? What is he doing that I’m not doing, now that I’m in it?’ His timing is impeccable when he wants to fall off the beat, these are things that, through experience and time, I had to learn.”
