Emma Chamberlain Reflects on Her 2023 Makeup Looks: ‘You’re Not Going to Have a Hit Every Time’ (Exclusive) 

Emma Chamberlain is known for big cosmetic swings, and in 2023 she did some of her most daring hair and makeup looks yet.

“I loved experimenting,” the 22-year-old Lancôme ambassador tells PEOPLE of her approach to her look this year. “Especially when I’m working a red carpet or a fashion show. I just let my makeup complement my look.”

Although she changed it from one event to another, her goal is the same. “I want it to look cool. I want it to look interesting and intriguing,” she says.

However, the podcast host admits that not every make-up moment was a complete success. “You’re not always going to like everything about you and that’s totally fine. But trying it out is what’s exciting. You’re not going to have a hit every time.”

And it’s that willingness to take risks that Chamberlain says would have impressed her teenage self. “She’d be like, ‘Oh, hey, girl, you really don’t care, do you? That’s great,'” she says.

We asked the social media superstar to review five of her most talked-about beauty looks of 2023. Here’s what she had to say about each one:

Oscar After Party at Vanity Fair

Chamberlain kicked off 2023 with an “unintentional” 360-degree hair change at the celebrity party on March 12.

“Hair bleaching [blonde] my hair was falling out. I had to go back to brown and I had to play around a bit,” explains Chamberlain, who worked with Graham Nation on this half-up style with baby bangs.

Chamberlain admits she wasn’t 100 percent on board with the dramatic transformation (she later added that she doubted she’d go back to bangs again). “But it was one of those things where it’s like, ‘You know what? I’m on the road to healing,’ and I was like, ‘I’m just going to make the most of it.'”

What she loved: This shimmery green eyeshadow (by Lilly Keys Westbrook) of the moment, which she describes as a “swamp green vibe.”

The Met Gala

On May 1, she attended her third consecutive Met Gala in two custom Miu Miu skirts styled by Jared Ellner.

She arrived in a baby blue ensemble with a sparkly top, then opted for a midriff-baring black version for her red carpet correspondent duties.

How did she manage to make a quick change at the biggest fashion night? “It wasn’t too bad actually. I went into a back room that no one has ever seen before and no one should ever see again,” she said. (She also told PEOPLE StyleWatch in June that she had a bit of a wardrobe malfunction with the change.)

Straight hair pieces tied the different vibes together, as did her smokey blue eye makeup, which Chamberlain says was “so special and kind of reminds me of what I used to do for my cheerleading pageants when I was 15.”

When Lancôme took over the Paris landmark on September 26, Chamberlain chose a “classic French” red lip to celebrate.

Even when she was on the other side of the world, the California native stuck to her number one beauty rule: never leave the house “without a lip” because, she says, “it’s always a mistake.” (She also jokes that she’s “guilty as charged” when it comes to lip liner.)

Chamberlain was joined by a glittering group of Lancôme ambassadors, including Amanda Seyfried and Penélope Cruz. “I love them very much. They are the most beautiful women in the world,” he compliments.

BoF 500 Gala

Chamberlain continued her streak of hot styles at the BoF 500 Gala on Sept. 30 with her boldest look yet: platinum blonde brows.

“It was so scary. I didn’t know if it would look good because it’s a risky choice,” she says. “But I ended up loving it and I was so thrilled I did it. Now I’ll be bleaching my brows once a month probably for the rest of my life.”

CFDA Awards

Chamberlain took her CFDA Awards style to the next level on Nov. 6 in a structured Thom Browne dress, bow ponytail, and cyberpunk red eyeshadow.

Her hot tip for appearing on the red carpet? “Moisturize your skin as long as you can beforehand and rest.” Lancôme Génifique night cream and serum, which she applies “everywhere, everywhere.”
